Help...what's eating the leaves on my betula nigra

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I was going to try to figure this out myself, but decided it would be a lot faster to go to the experts here. the leaves look like lace. what is it and what, if anything, should I be doing about it? it's not exactly decimating the tree yet, but I love this tree and don't want to take any chances if it needs help.

Mornin' grandpa. If it is Japanese beetle, which it looks like, go out in the heat of the day and shake the tree. If the beetles are present they will fly/fall all around and you will have your answer. If there are as many as we have this year (again), you will also want to cry. This year I have resorted to spraying Sevin at nightfall. The reason for that is that Sevin is lethal to a whole bunch of beneficial insects, and if you spray near dark most of them have gone home. the Sevin will dry on the leaves and when the rascals come back to eat in the morning their fate will be sealed.

Pete, we do have jb's this year...don't always see them. interestingly, they are not eating my roses, which is what everyone else here at DG is complaining about. I have mostly seen them on the daylilies...didn't know they would bother my birch. have also been seeing a lot of grasshoppers.

thanks for the advice...now I know what to look for.
