Red recurved lily?

Shenandoah Valley, VA

A house that I pass on the way to the grocery store had the prettiest dark, bright red lilies blooming a couple of weeks ago. They had recurved petals like a tiger lily, looked about the same height as a tiger lily. Does anyone know what they were?

The looked a lot like this http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/BLITE.html perhaps a little redder but I'm sure they were at least 4 feet tall or taller.

Lilium pumilum is red but only short I think to 2 feet

I know. That's what I posted in the link. This was a lot taller than that.

There's quite a few red asiatics that recurve. Here's Red Velvet at the Lily Garden

Could be Viva, Fireworks, Red Strap. Some of these get pretty tall. I think Red Velvet is about 4 feet. Without knowing more about it, it's really hard to say.

Hmmm, hart, in the link it says: Lily speciosum Tenuifolium

Tenuifolium and pumilium are the same thing.

This lily wasn't a rosy red. It looked exactly like the Tenuifolium except it was a little bit redder than the photo at Bluestone and it was much taller.

Actually, it looked like a tiger lily only it was red. I couldn't see it closely enough to see if it had spots.

There is a tiger hybrid called Red Twinkles.

I'll bet that's what it is. I don't imagine it's anything very exotic. Thanks, Beaker.

Why don't you just stop by and ask?

Hmmm again, that's still interesting! My RHS book mentions 'tenuifolium - see L pumilum'.

There is no L. speciosum 'tenuifolium' mentioned, but they don't mention all of them.

In other words, L. tenuifolium may be L. pumilum, but not perhaps L. speciosum tenuifolium.

L. speciosum is in a completely different group of lilies (oriental group). L. speciosum album and L. speciosum rubrum. Hence my snicker earlier. Perhaps we should pool our pennies and provide this company that sells plants with a handbook of accurate Latin names. Maybe they think this word means specie (it doesn't, as far as I know).

Hart, have you knocked on the door yet and asked if they know the name of that lily?? I did that one day in Fairbanks and was invited in for coffee with Leslie Woodriff's sister . Imagine that. I was shattered and my daughter-in-law (who was always embarrassed by my knocking on door behaviour) could not believe that it was OK to talk to strangers about their gardens.

When living in Victoria BC we were 3 blocks from where the cruise ships docked so I often had people taking pix, etc etc.

Our Victoria front side garden (if I can find that picture)
