Abies nordmanniana

Elburn, IL(Zone 5a)

What do you coniferous types think of this tree here in Zone 5 in the wide open plains, no protection, full sun, wind, and it will get watered regularly?

Rock Island, IL(Zone 5b)

According to Resin - It's the best Fir for me of any (Rock Island, IL).

You might also check its relation - Abies bornmuelleriana - just as good.

Abies koreana does well too.

Abies balsamaea, "Fralsam Fir", Abies fraseri - all do relatively well too. Abies phanerolepsis - as well.

I forget what else.

I remember him saying it works well here--I am more worried about the exposed condition. No protection in the spot contemplated.

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi Knees --
It's doing fine here, but in a slightly protected area. I think I'd worry more about summer than winter, but our summers probably average a tad worse than yours.

I'd agree with Guy, some shelter will help

This is a friend's place, so no protection possible, and I mean zero! We will nix that one then. His second choice was Picea omorika. That one sounded much tougher. Would that be a better choice for that spot?

Presque Isle, WI(Zone 3b)

Kevin, all omorica, including as many of the dwarf varieties that I can find, have done as well as the norway in the up north frozen tundra of 3b. Engelmann have winter burned when small, but seem to grow out of it. Any orientalis taller that snow line stops right at that point. In my experience the serbian will be as hardy as the norway in exposed sunny locations without winter burn. Ken
