!!Rats!!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I broke this stem off while pulling it back to photograph. The good news is, it is from a big honkin' bulb from buggycrazy. It put up two nice stalks this first year of bloom! L. henryi var. citrinum...

Oh, that is lovely!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Darn it! Did it break away from the bulb or midstem?

A few days ago I scavenged a bulb from a friend that was moving. A nice 8 foot Henryi just starting to bloom. Of course I broke the stem from the bulb and I was a 3 hour drive from home! It had huge stem roots ~ the top wilted some but so far it so far the stem and blooms have survived the transplanting. Really poured the water to it and with support it perked right up.

I hate when that happens! Good idea for trying to save it, though.

My lily mishap today was getting stained by pollen on both my upper arms as I was taking pictures. That stuff didn't scrub off!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Some pollen is worse than others, isn't it??

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Winging... you need to use Scotch tape to lift most of the pollen, then stand in the sun for 4 days to bleach the rest out. Rubbing it just sets the stain!

Moby-- The stem broke about halfway so I'm not worried. I worry more about winter flooding in my lily beds!

I wallow in pollen around here. If I don't find some stuck on me at the end of the day something's wrong. I couldn't help taking some pollen from the broken citrinum and dabbing it on Gold Eagle right next to it...

Hmmm, stand in the sun for 4 days....I think I'll just "stick" with the yellowy orange streaks on my arms. Maybe I'll start a new trend! ;)

I could try scotch tape next time, although I was so sweaty, I think it just absorbed right in right away. Why, oh why do I plant in 90 degree weather?

Glad your lily will survive.

I broke a stem to the ground of Dizzy last year while weeding. I took it inside & the 5 buds opened to scent the house for a week! And Dizzy is up & blooming taller this year. YES!

That is a beauty! I have seen mention of a L henryii white form, but not citrinum. I am very partial to green throats. I am going to get a L henryii this autumn, there is another form of it called L rosthornii which I like and might get instead, have you grown it?

Kicking myself for not snagging one of those when she offered them. That is an extra special treasure!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Is there still a source for this bulb? What a beauty! I have 15 or 20 of Henryi , what a nice offspring yours is. I can't seem to find Buggy Crazy. Are they still around?

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I don't think she will be selling many lilies this year, but here is the link to her website.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Not too many listed. Does she usually sell more or is kind of getting away from them? That Godzilla is a great find.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Up until this year she sold a lot of lilies but they weren't profitable after figuring in the cost of chemicals (read: expensive) to keep many growing well in close quarters. I hope she kept some of them like her "Stunning" asiatic; I would like to get more. Otherwise I will just dig my bulb and scale it in the fall to get more. As far as the L. henryi var citrinum goes, I see she has seed 10sds/$1.00. I have some of those going but of course it will be awhile before I see first bloom.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I think I will go and buy the seeds and try them next Spring. How sad that she won't have many lilies now. Have you ever ordered from the Bulb Crate? I noticed them in an article in Fine Gardening as a source, was very surprised B & D Liles wasn't one of the souces. Perhaps it's politics.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

No, I haven't ordered from the Bulb Crate. I pretty much stick to the West Coast growers or infrequently stoop to the Dutch type catalogs. Fortunately I lucked out this year and everything I purchased from Van Bourgondien was true to name as far as I can tell. What you might do for something you really would like to have (say, Godzilla) is trade offsets or scales with someone on DG who has it.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

pardalinum, thanks for the tip. I'm not sure how great I'll be at this seed business, but I'm going to try. The West Coast seems to be where all the action is in lily breeding. I see you live in that area, lucky you. One of my favorite places is Yachats, OR.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I'd sure like to be in Yachats (pronounced Yahots) right now. We in the valley have been sweltering in a heat wave while the coast highs barely break 70 deg. if that high. I heard it was 104 in town here but I didn't see that high on my thermometer in the shade so it varies. You know, those microclimates! By the way, I get a kick out of your town name, I'll have to look it up on a map!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Whenever I order something, like lily bulbs from out your way they think I am saying the state first, and often interrupt me, telling me so. I'm right outside Madison, Wi.
We had a horrible heat wave here last week, so I know of what you speak. 105 in even in Northern Wi.!
I think I have had some Cascade Frseh yogurt with berries from around your place :0) Marionberries?! Yum!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

pardalinium, what is the name of your lily? I take it that it is not "Rats!"

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

It is L. henryi var. citrinum, the yellow form of L. henryi.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Magnolia, your story about ordering bulbs is funny. It reminds me of my late brother who had the unfortunate middle name of Dee. In grade school when the teacher would ask each student for their full name and he would say Dee, he would get in trouble. I want your FULL name, not middle initial. When he repeated it they thought he was getting smart with them and he would get sent to the principal!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

pard, what is strange is that even when you grow up, you can still feel like a grade schooler when you get reprimanded like these, even when you are the one who is right. Your poor brother, at least I can't get sent to the principal! Whew!
I'm gonna order those seeds of that yellow henryi;it's a beauty!
