I have changed this thread to, PONDS IN PROGRESS, the progress of anyone's pond who would like to share. I get excited even when there not mine. So everyone SHARE pictures, pictures and more picture.
This shall be the begins of my husbands dream. All plz be patient however. My mother - in - law rehabilation at my house ( her care must come first). So between that and the 90 - 100 degree weather and of course those rains, that keep half filling the pond before is ready and soaking the ground i would sink knee deep in the mud right now, it is going to be a slow go. Hopefully we will get started again in 3 - 4 weeks. So place me as a watch and be very very patient.
Thank you n2birds for the request this shall be fun.
Meanwhile why dont all of u show me yours. I check the sight often. I am very igore to see all of them. None to small, None to large, and ofcourse none to finished or unfinished. Will love them all. Feel free to post your progress here also all of you.
THANKS and Beautiful gardening to all of you.

As requested progress of my new pond
So you will all know some of the plans OFCOURSE they will change as we go they always do.
At the top of the picture will be a 3 tiered waterfall, at the bottom will be a stream leading into the filtration system and back to the falls. There will be I hope 2 boggs, lots of landscape, KOI, hopefully the frogs will come and visit when it is done. Here is a picture of some of the KOI that will be moved from front pond to back. Front will be taken out it is being used as a holding area for new pond right now so not very pretty.
How do you like this piece of drift wood. It washed up at our local lake and let me tell you it was a heavy little devil. Yes it will be moved to the back pond some where not sure where yet. It is approx 9' long. But lighter weight now it has dried for those 9 yrs. We have had it for approx 9 yrs perched right up there on the little pond. 7' X 8' X 4' deep approx 1500 gallons.
By the way how do you all like my weeds growing on the dirt mound of the first picture top right. Are they not growing very nicely. Tryed to kill them but they seem to love the year round stuff i sprayed them with. LOL
Yes they will be gone but i couldnt resist the comment.
I am glad you started a thread, rwmedic. It'll be nice to see it develop step by step, (picture frame by picture frame). I have sand, which can cave in unexpectedly. It's not as hard to dig, though. I have a preformed pond now, but may freecycle it and go with a pond liner instead. I do want a bigger pond. When a hoard of mating toads invaded my pond, the oxygen level altered and my two goldfish died. I am hoping a larger pond will prevent that.
Pixydish they are beautiful creatures. Lily is just define. And yes I am glad I dont have the ground that you do, but it look nice and sturdy for a pond. I also hire the neighbor boy all the time and his friends. See this picture below all of that rock was put in my driveway and they moved it all. They also helped me dig to replace septic lines for the new patio (next picture) which is next to the pond. I was even more lucky that around here you can rent big machinary, like the back hoe that dug my pond. Yes I cheated. he he he he. But you didnt show off your pond too HUN.
Ofcourse being teenage boys they got caught messing with our fish. You can image the scolding I gave them. They had the big fish net trying to catch our big fish. I explained to them that they are not like fish in lake and can be hurt easily. They our good boys just need a little guidance. I will still use them. And the fish were unharmed. Here is a picture of the patio next to the new pond. Still alot of work to be done. Waiting for cooler weather. And ofcourse Ma to get better.
OOOOOPs look at that I didnt think it got send, so you all get to see it twice. Think I might be proud of it. LOL
fireant I have seen you in many thread but yet to see your pond. PLZ share with us.
My pond is not much to share right now--too much algae. It's very sunny and hot. I have only two pond plants--a water lily and a water iris, not enough to shade the surface. I need to repot the lily because it's bursting out of it's pot. The coleus I planted around it are doing pretty good and holding up in the heat. They are shaded under a brug and a castor bean. I'll get a picture of it tomorrow, but it's a beginner's pond.
Fireant! I'm SO happy you just said that! I totally forgot to send you your water lettuce!
On it's way!
Sounds like it's going to be really nice rwmedic. I can't wait to see your progress. :)
Pixy- good grief- that looks like concrete!! I'm fortunate to have a brother that works at the local lumberyard. We rented the trac-hoe for the last two ponds I put in and he dug them for me LOL. There's no way I was going to be able to dig them by hand! I've already decided that we're renting the bobcat to level out the ground for the new greenhouse too- I'm not a digger. (Major digger anyway.) :)
Thanks, MerryMary.
Looking at the size of the ponds some of you build on this forum, I don't see how you could dig them by hand.
I have changed this thread to, PONDS IN PROGRESS, the progress of anyone's pond who would like to share. I get excited even when there not mine. So PLEASE everyone SHARE pictures, pictures and more picture.
fireant you maybe able to pick up a UV filter which will help tremendusly (miss spell. hehehe). We have had bad luck with them due to the fact that the pump we had had to high of a water flow for the UV filter. They really are great things. The kill that nasty algea you have. But I recommend the other one I explained to you for long term.
beccalynn WOW imagine that that is my daughters name only spelled (bekah lyn). And I dont see a picture of your pond.
fireant my water lilies have worked their way out of the pots every year I finally gave up and just put the bulb in a pot by its self with nothing else. The fish kept Knocking it over anyway, save myself trouble and the grow just as good, live through the winter with no problem. As you can see from above they cover over half my pond already. HAPPY POND BUILDING ALL and share share share.
I have another plant that is in a pot with nothing else in the pond, and it is working out fine. I think I will try the water lily like that, too. I am draining and cleaning the pond in two weeks, but I know that is only a temporary fix for algae. I just want it to look attractive when I have visitors for my daughter's wedding. After that, I am going to plan and develop a better pond.
LOL Pixie- bet you can't guess what color my hair is can you? ;) I hate trying to dig through rock though- the whole backyard in prime planting areas is rock and I just can't do it LOL.
Fireant....If you want to spend the money, Lowes has a filter with a UV light to kill algae for $149. It's very easy to set up, and a pond the size of yours will be crystal clear in 2 days.
I understand the rock part somewhat. Not like you guys but my mother used river rock for all her landscaping and I am the one who does all the planting. My fathers favorite is the Canna and here it has to be dug up ever year and replanted. I hate working in that rock but it is so pretty when I get done and my parents are so proud of their yard. They let me know all the time. Makes me feel good to do something that brings that much joy to them. I added bird bath last year that I personaly painted for them and feeders this year. So i guess it is all worth it ROCKS and all. LOL
Fireant like i said earlier the UV light is wonderful.. We just had to big of a pump for the light which caused to much water flow and kept breaking the lights.. Like MerryMary said it will clear in a couple of day. You will enjoy the clearity very much. I makes the water crystal clear.
And will be well worth it for a wedding.
In the fall I'll check out the filter / UV light. Right now I am paying for my daughter's wedding. It'll be worth the cost if it clears up the pond in two days. I have frogs, not just toads. I see them sitting on the lily pads, but when I try to get close enough to get a picture, they dive into the water.
fireant when is the wedding?
August 12
OMG I cant 4 get that one its my b-day. Huney you have plenty of time for the UV light to work it will clear your pond. I just called my husband to verify. He says if you get the UV light also get a bottle of algea clump stuff (LOL) cant remember the name of it. An aquatic place will know what you are talking about (not expensive). He says to follow direction and use UV and clean you filter a couple of time but not too clean you will kill the good bacteria. No bacteria will also cause cloudy and pea soup algea. He says you should have a beautiful pond by the wedding.
Beck
Thanks, Beck. I will try out a UV light. I guess it can be purchased apart from a filter? I already have a filter in there. I am slowly getting shade from some of the plants I have put there. There's a feed store in Clermont that has pond supplies. I'll ask them about the algea clump. I had one product that would take any floating material and cause it to sink to the bottom. It worked nicely, but I ran out of it.
I haven't worked much on the pond lately because of the heat here.
Happy coming up birthday. They've been engaged for 15 months, and now the time is passing really quickly--less than three weeks now.

Gee, if we had seen this thread before we went on vacation, we would made arangements to stop by. We made a swing down to Springfield, then went on to Seymore IN for another swap. and eventhough we were very late getting there Lou, was a very good host. We had a very good visit and looked at her garden / pond by flash light. We had more water lilies with us than what we actually needed. But I think they all found good homes. We also hauled two recliners to our daughter and SIL in Marion OH. On the way back we stopped at Niles MI. for yet another trade. Had a wonderfull time visiting with every one of the stops and of course at our daughters as well.
We love to see other ponds as well. No mater how big or little, everybody has something that is special. Our pond is also a work in progress. and it don't necessarly get done in one year, or even 5. Here are some pics of ours.
Getting late having trouble finding where pics are. check back later.
Russ
