Viburnum plicatum tomentosum fruit display

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Drove past these plants the other day at 50 mph and had to turn back and get some pictures. These plants clearly receive no attention whatsoever, and they do show a little drought damage, but they still put on a great show!

Here are nearby plants which did not have nearly as good a display. In fact, of about twenty plants, sparsely spaced, only a handful were covered in fruit.

Oh sure...rub it in...not one bloom on my second year 'Shasta'. ;-(

Is that third photo of a volunteer plant or was it planted?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I would guess that it was planted. There were several clumps of them planted about, all about the same age. However, given the copious amount of seeds these plants can produce, and their relative ease of germination I would not rule out an occasional volunteer. But, in this case, I would think the volunteers would still be quite a bit smaller.

Edited for this added observation: This Viburnum seems to be absolutely deer-resistant. These plants are in a heavily deer-populated area, and I've grown it in sites that are veritable deer pastures with no damage.
