Show us your Summer Bulbs & Discussion Part 3

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

AuntB, this plant is new to me, thanks to a DG buddy. I don't have to pull it up, but I suspect you might have to. Hopefully someone will post soon.

Years ago somebody gave me one. I didn't know what precious plant I had so I gave it away to my friend. The first year she got foliage and no blooms. the second year she called me all excited when this wonderful red ball appeared in her yard. When I realized what it was, I went on a hunt. B&B sells them, I bet if you give them a call, the horticulturist can be of assistance.

It depends on the species, H. albiflos has leaves with flowers and is evergreen. H coccineus flowers before, but can flower at the same itme as it has leaves. They often flower prolifically after a fire.

Nice one voss, I have been tempted but not wanting the extra 'tender' plant at the mo.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Hmmm, after a fire??? I think I did order it from B&B.. thanks for the info..

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Here's my albiflos. Always has leaves. It's a houseplant here.

Beautiful! Now, would that be amongst the orchids?

It's one I may be tempted with, evergreen being a bonus.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Nope. It lives with the hippeastrum windowsill. It is such a hardy plant, too. Here it is when I first got it.

Thumbnail by boojum
Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

You mean tough hardy? I love cybister hipps, is that Ruby Meyer? Catalogue pics don't look like that!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hmmm. I'm not keen on spidery looking amaryllis but boojum your pic is beautiful. since it is being offered in the coop, maybe I should get it.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I got a couple blood lilies when I visited Florida this winter. Got them at Home Depot. It bloomed, then the foliage took off. Now it's outside in its pot, with wide leaves about 12" long and 4" wide.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

That's a rare one I found by mistake in a bin. The bin label was 'Papilio.' It's called cybister 'Merengue.' Here's 'Ruby Meyer.' She was a bit disappointing-flowers struggled to open and very short stems. Got her by mistake from John Scheepers. Was supposed to be 'Pink Floyd.' That's one way to accumulate more hippies.

Boojum, I'm confused. the pic posted today at 1:25pm, what is that one, Merengue?
then the one you posted at 8:05pm, is that Ruby Meyer?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Second one Ruby Meyer voss. It does look more pink, I don't think I have come across Merengue. It is exceptionally nice.

kb, could your Blood lily be a Scadoxus? There's another thread with one on, it used to belong to Haemanthus.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

That's it. First is Merengue and second is Ruby Meyer.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Merengue is rare-can't believe I got it 5 minutes from my house in a bin. Veronica Read (writes books on hippeastrums) IDed it for me by e-mail.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Yes, it's a Scadoxus and I only posted it because vossner posted her picture. LOL.

Apparently, this will keep its foliage until January, when it goes dormant for a couple of months. That will occur inside here, as it gets too cold for me to keep it outside all year round.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

kb, I like to see people trying to grow these things, it encourages others who have only thought about it! Good luck with it.

boojum, so lucky to pick up a gem like that, I thought it looked different to RM. I wish I had a bin like that 5 mins from my house. I do have Pennels, they have loose ones in the autumn, mostly with tags like 'red', perhaps I should scrutinise the bulbs for something that jumps out at me! Perhaps they get bulbs that are surplus, or just don't quite fit the size requirements.

I just realised, I haven't posted Dizzy here..the flowers are huge, my hand is 7" long.

Look at the fine red line on the edges, and the raised spots. They remind me of those little blobs on rubber tyres. It's very popular with the insects!

Here is my rain lily. She fairly dainty, but pretty, none the less. I also have Elephant ears (no pics) that are really taking off!

Welcome music2keep! I see you have recently joined DG. Join in the fun!

A lovely atmospheric picture of your rain lily, I could do with some of those right now, they would enjoy the rain we are getting just now!

After all the extreme heat it's down to 17C for a couple of days, then back to more normal supposedly. It reminds me too much of the cold to come, groaannnn...

Here's one of Lilium Black Beauty

Thanx for the Wecome, wallaby1! I have been roaming around at DG's for a little over a month and LOVE it. I wish we would get some rain...& it's very hot! The garden hose is getting a work out!

That is an absolutely gorgeous Lily!

Kenton, a pic of my Flevo and/or Laguna. These are in a pot and the other ones I planted are in a raised bed... they have yet to bud....

hi all,
Welcome, music! Love those lilies wallaby. That reminds me-Henry's Surprise is blooming now and I'm in love. Beastly hot here! I was in Brattleboro, Vt and it was 102 degrees there. IN VERMONT!

Here's Henry's Surprise.

He is lovely. all those purply spots and fine edge too!

boojum, look what I found. This site I had in my favourites as they do sell to the UK, minimum of 3 bulbs but post is cheap and from Europe!

That's great!! Go for it.
BTW, some of my hippeastrums are budding up outside in pots. I'll post pics when they ever bloom.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I'm in love too w/ Henry's Surprise. I wonder if I could grow it in houston. I think I'm going to hold off buying lilies for one season, until I see what lilies comes back in 2007. But boy, it is hard! I want them all, and I want them now!

Recent arrivals.

jmorth I am impressed with your Lycoris, they look to make a great fill in between taller lilies.

I have lusted over Lycoris sprengeri but it's not easy to get. It appears to be hardier than I thought too,

wow Lycoris Sprengeri is quite unusual, pretty

Here come the fall-bloomers.
Interesting, Aunt B. Good pairing with the canna in the background.

Grand Lilies, all.

Dahlia Vancouver, the second plant, had flowers looking quite pale. The colder weather looks to have brightened them up, strange.

Thumbnail by wallaby1
Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

The colors on Lycoris sprengeri are definately far out. The color on L squamigera isn't comparable though it can be impressive. The first pic is of their initial surfacing through a bed of coleus.

This pic of a bud opening has something of an alien feel to it.

and, the unfurling...

They do have purple-blue tips in bud, and I agree they ae impressive! The pic of L sprengeri may have been enhanced anyway, but I would like some whatever.

My second Dizzy has more red bleeding through the petals, I am really impressed with these, so are the insects, I could fill a bed with them!

Glad. 'Laguna' with Zant. 'Black Star' leaf.

and 'Flevo Kosmic.'
The differences are slight enough this year that bulb quality could be the only real difference. 'Laguna' so far is smaller, a touch more fuschiw to the edges.

K, cannot see a diff. love them both.

Note t self: do not take afternoon naps, else I will be posting on DG at 4:30am
