Every flower on this brug seems to be podding.
I think she has a few pheromones.
Wow! wish mine were that prolific!
X
All the crosses I made the past few weeks have fallen off. I guess from the high heat and humidity and wind.
Snort - Giggle...... That's what the neighbors used to call my Mom. Fertile Myrtle, mother of nine.
Forget the pods - you had over 100 flowers on one brug - that is incredible. I do back spines if I have a single flower, lol.
Tussee
lol Kin I was thinking the same thing
Well if she has decent blooms I shall name it Fertile Myrtle. LOL
Gosh Mary, 9 kids!! Was your Mom a good Irish Catholic girl? My Mom would have had that many if nature had not intervened. She had 5. I can't deal with 1. I do not know how woman did it all back then.
Tussee, this one is planted in the ground and that makes a lot of difference. It is about 1 year old, first flush. But I planted it very late last year and it overwintered in the ground so grew a strong root system. When yours are at least 2 years old and you have pruned them right, I bet you too will have 100 + bloom easily. It will be harder for you then it is for me for sure. But you have a gardener's heart so I bet you can do it!!
Kell, I have 5 children......from 36 to 16. I'll bet it was easier to raise them back then than they are today. Both brugs and kids! LOL!!
I have 2 kids a 40 yr old and a 25 yr old .my mom had 9 kids and my grandmother had 17 kids in the early days no birth control pills and yes we are catholic !
Now I wish my brugs would flower some have buds now. Axle rose had 15 and dropped most of them in this heat.
Elva
kell what on earth will you do with all those seeds.
Thinking back people used to ask my Mom that about her children, I was the second youngest of 15 YES you read it right, we had our own teem for games I had 7 sisters, and 7 brothers so like my Mom I know you will know how to handle them. LOL
Doris
Wow, Doris. You did come from a big family. I was the oldest of six.
Melanie, your spread is incredible. So at this point, does your 16 keep you young or make you so old? LOL. I agree, it is tough raising kids today. Society is totally against you now it seems.
You had lots of aunts and uncles growing up Elva! You may have to wait for early fall for your big flushes. That is when all the brugs seem to shape up all over the country. I can't believe how hot some areas are, We were 84 here yesterday and I was dying. I am a wimp.
So Doris, were you spoiled rotten by being almost the baby? Your family must have had birthday parties all the time. Can you imagnie trying to pay for college for all of them?
Ada, that is like me, but I was the middle of 5. Being the oldest made you a mini mom!
kell. NO i was not spoiled but my younger sister was, she was the last lol.
Now I have 9 Granddaughters, and the 20th GREAT grandchild on the way.
Pod setting like that is a great quality! Wish my brugs would do that.
hi kell my brugs are growing but no buds having trouble with cucumber beetles many holes in the leaves i have been spraying with immunenox. friday it was 90 saturday 92 and today 96 my brugs just melt in this weather. Bob
Gosh Doris, 20 great grandchildren! Amazing! And you are so young at heart I have a hard time thinking of you as a great grandma. Though we all know you are a GREAT greatgrandma. LOL Do you have a family picture with everyone in it?
Delisa, if you had any more pods you would drown the planet in brugs. LOL. I have a terrible feeling that brug is ugly or I would think I would remember it.
I think a lot of people can relate to your problems, Bob. It seems to be so hot all over. I bet when it gets cooler yor brug swill set some buds for you. I was having such trouble with cucumber beetles too down at the plots that I bought a can of Raid Flying Insect. I held my breath and started running up and down the rows of brugs while I held down on the buttnon and held my arm up high so the spray went up and then fell down over the brugs. I had a mask on but I do not trust them. LOL.
Oh and just before that, I actually sprayed around the flowers I could see them hiding in. It kills them DEAD. I just hope it doesn't kill me too. I did that about 1 month ago and for the first time I saw some yesterday again so it really helped. So I will do it again next time I am down there.
I know Immunox has 1 kind that has insecticide in it but mostly I think it is for fungal diseases. Are you sure it kills cucumber beetles? I spray my roses with it twice a year for rust, powdery mildew and black spot.
Here is a brug down at the plots I have high hopes for. It was just coloring up but I liked its form a lot. Red X EP.
Kell, Guess What. I love it I bet you are surprised. I would like to see an ugly one you have grown.
It is 104 here today and so far I buds are not falling off.
It is to bad Red X EP does not put out pods like that.
Be sure to let us know when she blooms again. I would like to see that bloom ugly or not I think she would be worth crossing just for strength alone. Joan
Kell, They are 36, 33, 29, 25, and then my 16 year old. She was such a surprise! I love her dearly. Yes having her keeps me young.....til you go shopping with her, then you know just how old you are!! Try keeping up with her at the mall!! LOL!!
Also, I have never known you to grow an ugly brug. They are all so beautiful! I know that I speak for a lot of us when I say that we wish to live closer to you so that we could have your throw-aways! LOL!!
She's beautiful, Melanie.
Wow, Doris. What a bunch of cuties. Oh, I could really spoil them. LOL Well, back to the hot sun. Everything is melting out there including me. I had to come inside for something cold to drink and had to check out Dave's while I was inside. LOL
How fun everyone. Kids, grandkids, they are all wonderful.
Kell those pods are amazing. How about just cutting one off and sending it to Utah, Maybe in a few years I could tell you the color. lol.
Marie
I have a feeling that brug will be long gone before those pods are ripe, Marie. I no longer let the brugs get to be such huge trees, I am trying to dig them as soon as I feel their blooms are nothing special. Sometimes I just do not have the heart for awhile though.
Melanie, your girl is a doll. I bet she is of your heart. I always wished I had a girl along with my boy. You must have such fun with her.
Doris, you need to have a huge family reunion to get them all together. What a event that would be. Just think you are are the cause for all those lives. And such beautiful lives at that.
Ada, do you ever just goof off? I have never known a harder worker than you are.
I have so many ugly brug flowers you would not believe it! I just do not post many of them since there usually is not much interest in ugly ones. Here is a double PINK ugly I may dig soon. I have even named this one.
Holy Cow Kell that is sooooome fertility Brug.... Maybe its a sign or something.....
LOL.......never have I seen anything like that. Do you know what it is pollinated with or can it be anything?.
Did you do this................LOL.....or did the bees??
Have fun and I hope we will too keeping up with this. This should really be intresting to see how many make it to harvest .
Ada, everything I have pollinated, over 75 blooms have all fallen off as well. I think I will wait until the weather is cooler. I used all my Tangarine pollen and none took so I will have to start over again later when I get more orange pollen.
This has been the hottest summer I can remember in quite awhile.
:o)
Dee
Kell thank you for showing the ugly brug if we only see the beautiful ones we don't learn the whole story. Joan
AWWWW kell, it's not ugly, just different, and still a pretty color.
I took this pic last week and forgot to post it. It is the brug from the first post with all the pods. I will see if all these pod just for fun before I toss it.
It is covered in flowers but as I suspected the flower itself is not a winner. But as you can see, it is incredibly floriferous It is interesting how many blooms from each node it puts out. And the nodes are so close together.
Kell, would you not want to use that brug for breeding, seems like a great trait to pass along. Joelle
I like it , the flowers are so pretty.send it to South Texas Kell, will pay Postage....
Elva
LOL Elva, believe me, there are many nicer brugs out there for sure. You are like I was when I was first captivated by these. I didn't discriminate between them. I bet this time next summer you will be tossing lots of your own.
Oh Joelle, yes there are a couple of traits it has that would be good but I do not have the inclination or the room to grow out a few hundred seedlings looking for and hoping that those traits will combine with better form and color traits of other brugs to give me a better brug.
I would think it would take a couple of years to get a keeper from it and even then it may not be special enough in comparison to all the other brugs out there to keep. I have better base brugs to work with. Plus my husband wants us to have a fuller life and I am finally hearing him. There is more fun to be had in life that does not involve mud and mites. LOL.
Kell, I think I am beginning to under stand that. Joan
That is a beautiful brug. It sure is a fertile myrtle. Kell I understand also but I don't want or have the means to pay for better ones. I wouldn't buy one one ebay and I sure wouldn't pay the 172.00 that that one on there went for. I have been given some beautiful ones if I can get them to live in this heat with these bugs. The heat is the worst.
I like drooling over yours. And I know you are a hard worker as there is no doubt with the brugs you have.
Thanks for the beautiful pictures.
Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
I loved seeing everyone's babies.........children grandchildren and brugs...... and all are so wonderful!
Kell, are you saying that if you trim up your brug you end up with more blooms? I have a Frosty Pink (type) that's really taking a beating from the sun and heat and maybe it would be a good idea for me to go ahead and cut it back and it will be back in time for cooler fall weather.
Also, I could pass on lots of cuttings. LOL.
What do ya'll think about whacking it??
Barbara
Barbara, I don't know about trimming, but.............I would stand in line for the cuttings.
LOL.
Kell, You do out do yourself. I love that picture. Keep um coming.
I am still waiting for my brugs to show any sign of blooming... waiting, waiting, waiting.....
Marie.
Barbara don't wack it. Some of my brugs get totally heat stressed bald before cooler weather arrives. They'll naturally and easily produce new leaves and flowers when the weather cools off without chopping on them. If you cut your brugs back you are in possible danger of not seeing any flowers before your first freeze. You'll have to wait until next year to give the plant time to regrow what you cut off.
Barb, point me to which post I made that you are referring to so I can tell you what I meant. LOL. For the life of me I can't see where I mentioned pruning.
In general, I have noticed that if you tip prune, you can get your brug to put out more side growth at the nodes so you get a denser canopy which will put out lots more blooms. If you do this frequently, you will end up with a nice dense canopy.
This particular brug in the picture just genetically has short spaces between nodes. It is the second brug I have made with that trait and it is a good one. This brug is odd in how the blooms hang down from the branches, unattractive to my eye. The other brug like this has a flat canopy which is most attractive for the blooms hang down better. I have never pruned this one for shape, but if I did top it, the canopy may improve dramatically.
I think it is too late in the season to do a drastic pruning for you will cut off too much flowering wood. But you probably can clean up its looks some if you want to.
Marie, hang in there. I sure hope you get lots of fall flowers. I hope I do too. LOL.
Kell,
I probably misunderstood your July 15th post above where you referenced "if you pruned them right". I see you meant tip pruning and probably a little earlier int he season.
Last Friday night we had a huge storm come through and I got "unintentional cuttings" (if you know what I mean. LOL) that I've stuck in water to root. The last storm like that I started a few cuttings that are now newly rooted so I don't know when I can start giving them away.........both the ones in water and the ones potted and newly rooted. Maybe ya'll can give me some advice on this.
Yes, this heat has really taken a toll this year. I also had a couple of cuttings given to me that I planted a couple of months ago and they have barely done any growing so it will take another year before anything happens with them. New ones planted in March have grown like crazy (4'-6' tall) but the heat has made them look pretty bad.
Kell, by the way, how's your vireya doing? Mine has grown about 12" from that same tiny pot and I've been advised to leave it in this pot till next year. I have to keep it in a fairly shaded area here in the FL sun.
I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised come fall!
Barbara
With as many as you have , you probably can't tell if it smells good . I like big flowers strong smelling , good form and red , pink , yellow or blue . Not really into white or pastels . Big leaves are a plus and rare ones -- which doesn't really apply to brugs - but does to Dahlias , hibiscus , Sangs and Datura's .
