This is a hardy hibiscus my husband bought for me at an open air market. It was a beautiful surprise, but in the process of transplanting it in a primarily unused portion of the yard it was broken. He attempted to create a splint with a stake and some zip ties. Their were 4-5 buds at the tip of the break that proceeded to bloom after the transplant and injury (it was transplanted July 2, 2006). This is what it looks like now. Should we cut all the way back since all the branches from this main branch have started to wilt/die? Even growth below the break has turned yellow and begun to die (at least this is my take on it). Please, ignore the weeds. These were cleaned out when it was transplanted, but as you can see from the other side of the chain link, our neighbors have abandoned this part of the yard, and with several heavy rain showers after transplant, these weeds have returned with vigor, almost overnight).
Hibiscus in need of Help
It's a hardy hibiscus so the top where it is broke is basically done for this season. It will sprout from the ground again next spring even larger and wider. :-)
Thank you!!! Should we cut it back to the ground on the broken branch?
Yes. If it were mine I would go ahead and cut the dead stem off. The other part of the plant looks healthy and appears to be doing well. It will all come back next season bigger and prettier than ever. I use Miracle Grow Bloom Booster on mine once in a while. Seems to give it a boost. I have one that has burgandy blooms.

Thank you. Actually went ahead and cut it back earlier today. I just couldn't stand how sorry that branch looked. We had a nice rainstorm today, maybe I'll see some improvment soon. :-)
