Now I am scared!!!

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

I have been reading some of the posts on this forum, AFTER buying my very first brug. I bought it to replace a plant that I decided to dig up and put in a pot (It was in the ground two days) because I found out it was not hardy here. So I decided to get this brug becaause I had looked them up on plant search and it said they are hardy here (zone 8a). but all the troubles I am reading about now scare me. It sounds like they do better in pots, and brought in for winter. I had no idea they have so many pests, also. And I of course bought it because the pictures were so pretty, and I read on here that a lot of them don't bloom. I guess I will have to wait and see but I am a little leery now...

Tsk! Not to worry .. I live in your zone and all of mine are in the ground and they freeze down to the ground and come back bigger and better every year! Don't be discouraged!!!!

Xeramtheum is sooo right. I know people in Raleigh NC (zone7) who grow Brugs. I think they are one of the easiest plants to grow. You just water them and feed them and watch them grow. mine freeze back to the ground every year and come up bigger every year. This past winter they had only a small amount of frost damage (they really like a little protection from afternoon sun here in central Fla. so they were at the edge of my oaks) until mid Feb and 2 nights in a row we went down to 23 and were below freezing 7 hours one night and 10 hours the 2nd night.. Left their skeletons until after last frost date cut back everything that wasn't new growth (from the ground-wood freezes dead)and it's well over 8 feet tall right now and will get to 15 feet or more by October.
I love my brugs, I grow over 30 varities and have them planted all over the place.

Thank you sooo much for the encouragement! Both of you have some georgous brugs. I hope my will do as well. I would post a picture of how it looks now but I don't have a digital camera yet. I will try to describe it because I was quite surpried when I saw it ( a local nurssery got it for me from a wholesale supplier they use) after seeing all the pictures on DG. Mine is three long bare stems with the leafy growth only at the top of each stem. The growth looks good, and no sign of disease or pests. You can see where the cut off the lower branches. I havbe seen some pics on DG that look like that. But most arae like the ones ya'll have (they go all the way to the ground) I wish mine did. Will it growa leaves down below next year when it comes back?

Yep .. they start from square 1 when growing back like it shows in my pictures. If you want a tree just cut off all the leaves & suckers on the bottom and leave the top. Personally I prefer bushes.
