I traded for this and it was supposed to be Plastic Pink. It's the second blooming. I really don't think it will be as dark as Plastic pink. Maybe its a seedling Who knows?
Tami
This was supposed to be Plastic Pink
It doesn't look like Plastic Pink to me either, but it is lovely. Plastic Pink seems to be one of those cultivars that is extremely hard to root. Here is William's picture: http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/93869/ and Paula's: http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/94134/
Yeah, Brad's is the Plastic Pink that I know. It has very rounded petals.
Clare took the words right outta my mouth..
I also can vouch that this plumie is hard to root but i think it's because all the cuttings i got
were thin and when it comes to red plumies thin is not in my friends..
My 4th cutting is looking ok but i don't see her growing like the others..
Well y'all I knew it wasn't Plastic Pink but wanted to share it. Its still real pretty. Just one of those trades that was amiss. Well at least I didn't buy it on Ebay and find out it wasn't what I bought afer four years. Now that would be bad. I still have the info from the guy I traded with. I only traded Taro for it. I guess I can't complain. LOL
Tami
We've all been there, Tami, and your plumie is quite lovely. I wouldn't complain either:-) I actually like yours better than Plastic Pink. That PP color is not one of my favorites. It's pretty gaudy! LOL! Come to think of it, it is the perfect flower for Kell who loves gaudy pinks! I must remember to tell her to get that one.
Tami that looks like one i have that is also marked plastic pink...i wonder if that happens when they're cuttings...it is very pretty indeed..
Yes, the intense heat of a greenhouse really does bring out the darker colors, doesn't it? My Hilo Beauty was almost unrecognizable in the greenhouse, but as soon as I brought it outside, it started blooming like everyone else's. The same is true of my Duke. I noticed that the color red is really brought out with heat especially. This is just another reason why it is difficult to identify an unknown from a picture as different environmental conditions can alter a flowers appearance.
Tami & Dutchlady, thank you for the ID help, it does look alot like Cerise to me too.
I really do like this plumie, but was a bit dissapointed to find out it wasnt what I paid for.
I recieved this cutting from Ebayer "1-stop-aloha". I just looked at his current listings and noticed a similar flower he is offering called "Rasberry Starfish".(http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=006&item=160009777292&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1)
I wonder if I should let him know about the mixup....
Heres another pic of the one I recieved...

I've seen many pictures of Cerise, and I agree that that is what you have, Dave. I think it is much prettier than Plastic Pink in my opinion. Plastic Pink is also notorious for rotting instead of rooting when you try to root cuttings of it. If you would like Plastic Pink, I would recommend that you order a grafted one from Florida Colors.
I hate how they (crooks) name plumerias what ever they want. I don't have plastic Pink either but It could be worse. At least I didn't pay for it. I would tell him about it.
Tami
Tami, you are right that there are a lot of crooks on eBay that are scamming people, and I have contempt for them too, but in Dave's case, his seller is Matt, who is a member of Maui Plumeria Gardens and who moved to Hawaii recently from San Diego. I think he is a good guy and sells healthy cuttings, but he is searching out new cultivars or rather undiscovered ones, and he obviously made a mistake with Dave's cutting, but I think he will do the right thing and send him a Plastic Pink cutting if Dave brings it to his attention. I've never purchased from Matt, but I have heard that his cuttings are fairly large and healthy-looking, but they need to be exactly the cultivar that was represented and purchased if he is to keep his reputable status.
Tami & Clare, thanks for your responses. I probably wont try to get a replacement from him.
I have given him alot of business this year, and except for a few instances he has been pretty dependable.
I guess I'll have to call this one a "Cerise type" because even though it looks like one, I wont ever be sure of it. I agree with Clare that a good reputation means everything when selling named CV's to people you will probably never meet. Thats why I like forums like this one so that people from all over can compare notes and draw their own conclusions...
Heres another one of Matt's that just opened for me.
He sold it as "Neon Lights"
(Let me know if it looks like something else)
Matt, good for you! That is what I would call it too: "Cerise type" or "Cerise look-alike." That way, if you trade or sell cuttings, in the future, people will know exactly what they are getting, and it won't be misrepresented. It is a gorgeous dark color and quite stunning. "Neon Lights" is also gorgeous. I think Matt has, in the past, tried to get the members of Maui Plumeria Garden forum to help him to identify pictures of flowers to see if they are named cultivars. He may also be doing some research on his own. Most big trees in people's backyards in Hawaii are unnamed hybrids, so he is naming them himself. He either knocks on people's doors to ask for cuttings, or he may offer to trim people's trees for free. I can't remember now. If I were him, I would just sell them as unknowns to demonstrate his integrity, but I suppose he is free to call them what he likes. I think Kell might have also purchased "Neon Lights" and "Rasberry Starfish" from him.
Dave and Clare,
I have my own opinion about pulling names out of a hat for plumerias to sale them on Ebay. It takes several years and alot of work to get one named and I don't think you should name it unless its registered. But that is my opinion. Thats why I won't buy on ebay. You just never know what you will get unless you know the person. There are many cerise types at Koko Crater.
Tami
Hi Tami! I do see your point; however, there are so many J.L. hybrids and Florida Color hybrids that are named, sold, and not registered. If those two large commerical sellers can name and sell cultivars without registering them, then others ought to be able to do it also in my view. Without some organized process and form of control, however, the naming process can spin out of control and has to some degree. It would be nice if all recognized cultivars could be registered so that there is a better accounting of the cultivars in circulation.
I have had some very important discussions with Matt.
I find him to be a gentleman and reputable.
Id buy from him anyday.
If there is any hard feelings regarding a misnamed or mistaken ID
I am sure hed square up.
Malestorm,
I didn't mean to call Matt a Crook but last year there was someone selling what they claimed to be a purple Plumeria. They had doctored the picture. I just feel bad for people that trust on Ebay only to be ripped off. I hear that ebay is cracking down on that sort of thing now. I hope so. I will only buy from someone off the group thats well spoken of. I have never bought a plumeria off ebay, probably won't. I try to get mine from Emerson or from the Plumeria sales(PSA) here in Houston.
Tami
You cant go wrong with Emerson!
The PSA sales are to die for!
Paula PlumeriaLady has spectacular varieties for sale also
She has grown my collection substantially.
She has 2 of my favorites
Paulas Pink and Paulas Slaughter Pink
Both are non stop bloomers with a heavy boquet, absolutely lovely!
I didnt think you were calling Matt a crook ;^)
I was just standing his guard. 8^D
He actually has some incredible new releases from time to time.
If the photo you saw was doctored I bet within 4 guesses I get the schiesters name lol!
There are a few bad ones out there.
We have provided a list of reputable sellers on e-bay
There are many good ones to choose from who have proven themselves worthy of our business.
Malestorm,
I know Paula as well. I have never bought any plumeria from her though. I'm really in no need of any more. I still have a few wants though. I just don't care to buy any off ebay. We have over 200 that we plant in the Spring and dig up every Fall. I did all the digging up last November because Allen had to work late and I had disk problems bad for several months. I still need to be careful but one can't give up such a love. LOL Or Addiction. We are headed for Hawaii Wednesday. I'm sure we will find a few to bring back. :-)
Tami
Tami, did you go to the recent sale at the convention in Texas? I can't remember now, but I think you said that you did. Did you see what Thai cultivars Luc of Florida Colors had for sale? I'm just wondering because that was the first offereing of Thai varieties that I know of since they got back from their Thailand trip, and I was wondering which ones they had for sale.
Have a great trip to Hawaii! Wow! Please post some pictures of trees and flowers when you get back when you can. We would love to see them and live vicariously through you. You should have no trouble bringing back cuttings from Hawaii. I hear that they just inspect them at the Ag station at the airport and let you put them in your purse or carryon. Be safe.
I have bought several plumeria cuttings from a couple of web sites from Hawaii. I am now
finding out that they are not what was listed ( I still have the receipt and description).
As a new plumie addict, I guess that is a lesson we all learn and avoid later.
I now only purchase from some sellers on ebay (sandy, brad & matt) that I have found
to be reputable and stand by their products. I have also bought from 1 questionable
person on ebay. BUT, I only found out about the "questionable" after joining and reading
forums like this. A lot of knowledge is gained here for an enjoyable, satisfying and
expensive hobby/addiction.
Heather
Katy, Texas
Enjoy Hawaii!! Thats awesome!!
I have a friend in Kauia, she says that the best exotic plumies are found in peoples yards
So keep your eyes peeled while driving!!
The hotels and university have some nice ones too but no cutting them!! LOL!!
If you get lucky theyll all be in bloom as you drive past a road crew cutting them back.
Have a great time!
Ill be a nieghbor to you soon down there in the Katy area.
1 more year of school, then im moving to the gulf coast between Galveston and Corpus Christi.
I hope to start a small nursery, plumies, adeniums and cacti / succulents
Heather, you don't sound Klueless to me! Welcome to Dave's and the Plumie Forum:-)
Malestorm, Clare and Heather,
We went to Hawaii last year and already know the ropes. :-) I have a friend there that lets us drive her car while we are on the Island and her FIL is renting us a cottage on Black Point Beach. You can get cuttings all over the Island we just cleaned them up and took them to the ag dept and had them inspected and cealed up. We just took them on the plane as carry on.
Clare,
Allen and I went the the Sale in Clear Lake last month. We love meeting every body there each year. Roger and Laurie Galle are great people and Kathy And Vonna are great people. Emerson and Nancy Willis are also too be mentioned and of coarse Paula F.
Tami
Here's a picture of Vonna, Me Allen and Roger Galle. Kathy and Laurie are missing from the picture.
so a 100 LB dufflebag is carry on then? heh :^P
Great picture, Tami! I've been checking them out over at the PSA web site when I have a few minutes here and there. Kathy seems like a super sweet person from her posts over at Pals. I really like her a lot. And, of course, Paula is as sweet as can be. And I've known Roger since our old GardenWeb days. Plumie lovers are a great bunch of people. Have a great trip and enjoy yourself. It sounds like a blast.
Malestorm,
We take two extra rolling duffels just in case. ;-)
Clare,
We have eaten lunch with Roger and Laurie during the sale for several years now. Kathy and Vonna joined us two years ago. We have such a great time when we all get together. We are planning a road trip where Allen and I will pick up Vonna in Louisanna then Pick Kathy up in Florida before we head down to Laurie and Rogers. Hopefully this Fall.
Tami
WOW 2 rolling duffles!!
Awesomee!!
I hope you have property lol!!
Sounds like more fun! Let us know what beauties you find in Hawaii. Can't wait to see your pictures!
Do you need a personal Duffle Bag carrier?
I am available lol!!
My Plastic Pink is finally blooming, but I almost have to get on a step ladder to see it. I have it in a pot and you would think that would inhibit its growth, but it didn;t. It was almost five feet before it branched and it has two branches that are three feet long. Only one branch has an inflorescence. The flowers are beatiful, but the plant itself is not attactive. It is in full sun, so I know that light is not a problem.
Is this typical of the plant or do I have an oddball.
Malestorm,
If you can get here before Wednesday morning at 5 AM we might could use you. LOL. I hope to get a real Plastic Pink while I'm there this year. Oh and we just bought the 1/2 acre next door so I still have a little room.
Clare,
We will take loads of pictures. I will probably download them to Webshots and just post a link. I have a new camera that is for underwater as well. I hope I'm brave enough to use it under water.
Josegabriela,
I don't have a plastic pink but I would think it would do well in the conditions you mentioned yours in. I can't think of why it would look bad.
Tami
Can't wait to see your pictures, Tami. A link will do just fine. Congrats on that new 1/2 acre, you lucky gal you!
Josegabriele, this link describes Plastic Pink as being upright and open branching: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/OF-31.pdf (Page 25). I don't have one so I can't help you there. I do know that it is one of the quickest cultivars to rot when you try to root it.
