I'm looking for a tree(s) to put in my back yard in Lincoln CA (Zone 9). The soil is hard clay and rocks with poor drainage! This tree will be in full western sun. I already have two Crepe Myrtle 'Zuni and they do well of course but would like to plant something different next to them. I'm considering the Vitex agnus-castus. It sounds like it can take just about anything and look great too. I need shade and this sounds like a good choice. Anyone have an opinion as to its looks? Do nurseries usually stock this tree?
Vitex agnus in small back yard
I love the look of these--don't have one yet but when I landscape my new yard this fall I'm planning on getting one too. I do find them at nurseries here, usually not all year round but a lot of the nurseries will sell them when they're blooming. They're not one of the more common things that I find (you know, things like Crape myrtle that every nursery in the state has 500 of!) but they can be found, and if they're not at the nursery you shop at I'm sure they could easily order one for you.
I have seen them at Home Depot and Lowes here. I have one that is really old. They are usually drought tolerant but mine started looking a little ragged this year so I had to give it some extra water. You will have to regularly prune the suckers from the bottom, like crape myrtle.
