Mrs. R. O. Backhouse

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

I only have a handful of lilies, but this one is definitely a keeper. It is a very old martagon hybrid which is just as fragrant as martagon itself. Mine is growing in part shade and is 6 years old and slowly increasing.

Would you know it, I bought a 'Bellingham Hybrid' lily last year from Jacquesamand, it was a really deep red and pendant like a martagon.

It's starting to open, the new growth and buds have hairs on them, and the colour looks like it's going to be..........the same as yours Todd!

Don't think so Wallaby...your buds are much longer than my Mrs. Backhouse...plus, if you had a Backhouse, it would have been in bloom ages ago for you in the UK.

Hmm, maybe Todd, but I looked at jacquesamand today and they do have Backhouse Hybrid at £6.95, the Bellingham Hybrid is £3.50.

I'm not sure about blooming ages ago here, our lilies are quite late to bloom. It was new early this year and not established.

Take a look

We should know in the next day or two!

I think it's written in history, we're just going back over time! The powers of the universe have dictated that I should have this one!

North East England, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I would have any of those hybrids - they are wonderful!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Galanth, they are available to order, I will be putting one in. I'm wondering if I can wangle it to get the Bellingham Hybrid free as I did order it last year, and they normally notify you if something isn't in stock. It seems they list on expected stocks. Some of those species are very nice, but a nice price too. Take a look at Iris germanica firecracker, they also have Arisaema nepenthoides at £3.75.

For the American interest, there is a US store you can find by clicking on the logo at the top, but not so many on offer.

My Backhouse Hybrid has lifted one petal, it is reluctant to show itself!

I found the answer to mine, the Bellingham Hybrids can be red or orange.

I do like the colour, mine has nearly 2 flowers open today. The red might have clashed with the le Baron dahlia! It has bulbils in the leaf axils, does yours Todd?

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

No bulbils in mine. Yours must have tigrinum in its ancestry while mine is mostly martagon. Is your fragrant? Mine has a powerful smell!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I just went to have a sniff! The visual senses were so stunned I didn't think to smell it, but I would have been hit by it if it had been strong. It has the faintest scent, it is getting dark now, my thermometer today was 93F and some plants looked like limp spinach. The Lily liked it! Begging for rain.

The colour was stunning with the low sun shining through it, like a rich glowing gold-orange, now it looks more orange and it's well spotted with brown.

The flowers are more outward facing, I got some pics, have to download.

Introducing Bellingham Hybrid....

Ahhh..it does indeed look more like a L. tigrinum hybrid. Yours are more outward facing than Mrs. Backhouse, plus your flowers look larger and are more clear yellow while Backhouse is golden with a flush of pink. Nice looking lily!

The stem has bulbils all the way down the stem, and it's tall. The stem is dark too, I love the leaves, I'm really chuffed!
