Japanese Maple

Bel Air, MD(Zone 6a)

Can anyone tell me what maybe eating or destroying my little tree.
It has to be something that could move a rock from the mulch.
It seems to be just breaking off the limb and leaving the foliage on the ground.
It has broken the branches off up to 15". Could a rabbit reach that far. If it was a deer would they not start at the top of the tree, it is only about 2ft high?

A groundhog? Local teenagers?

Scott, you may be right about the groundhog.
Kids are pretty good in this neighborhood.
I just wonder why it did not eat the foliage.

I would go for rabbit cause they need to chew wood to sharpen their teeth. I as a vet recommend small branches in their cage to keep the teeth sharp and worn evenly

I have some cuts on my new one also. They are vertical cuts x2 about 3" and 2". I put some rocks around the trunk and sprayed with liquid fence. It's really low on the trunk. I don't know if these things would help you, or if they're really going to help me yet. I know we have lots of bunnies, deer, etc. I thought groundhogs burried under ground, not so I guess they come out and damage too.

My liquid fence that keeps all critters out of my garden. 10' fence and a Jack Russel terrier. No more pests.

I have seen a pretty large rabbit in the yard, it was probably (him Her) that did the damage.
I have put a wire fence around it now, should have done that earlier.

If it's a rabbit, the twigs will be cut cleanly at an angle, not broken off. Check out the branch stubs and see how they appear.

No there's a huge chunk out of it up in that picture. The trunk......would the rabbit chew on the trunk like that?

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

Rabbits do nibble bark, but they generally don't take "chunks" out of a stem. I couldn't see enough in the photo to tell. Maybe a squirrel? Do you have porcupines out there? Beavers? Martians with death-ray guns?

I'm not sure, I'm an import from Texas. I've been told around here, there are turkey buzzards, lots of deer, rabbits, beaver, ground hogs, voles, moles, foxes, and who knows. There are a lot of woods around. Farms also.

The cuts are at an angle.
We do have a lot of squirrels in the area.I put this wire cage around the tree, hope it is not too late and the tree will survive. Shirley
