I wanted a pond for many years before a friend finally convinced me that I could, in fact, have one.
My pond is a few years old and not what I really wanted but what I needed. I would have loved to have my whole acre of yard involved in the water garden with streams, waterfalls, several connecting ponds, bridges....I wanted it all.
What I have is a lovely pond that I can sit on the coping around it and enjoy the fish, water fall and just pleasure of being near the water.
Because of the Heron who choose to visit for dinner time, I have a net over the shallow parts held by the planters in the Spring, Summer and Fall of the year. It's not what I would like to see but at least my Koi are safe. I plan on making lower hyper-tufa planters (same color as the block) that are not so obtrusive for the coping. They will have grasses, foliage, and plants to make the pond look much better.
A Montana Pond with Koi On The Rocks!
I put a couple of slabs of sandstone in my pond, in the shallows and held up by more stone, for the Koi to have some shade or to hide. They love it. I was really surprised to see them climbing on top of the slabs for bugs and food that floated over to it. There is only less than an inch of water on top of the slabs....but that doesn't stop them.
My Koi are mostly scrub Koi a fellow who raises them would have killed but I took them for a very small amount of money. I don't care about their color....I love them with all their 'warts'.
That's fascinating! I never knew they could/would do that. Thanks for sharing.
That is amazing!!!
Well, I'll be darned! Have any of the offspring evolved to walk out onto land yet? LOL
Your pond is lovely!!! Had you seen my pond yet? It is netted and it is the best thing for my peace of mind. If you had not seen it it is the tread New members ponds. The netting is high enough for me to go in to clean, rearrange of thin out plants. Happy ponding!!! Bellie
Hey, Bingsbel!!
Love the pic of your pond.. its just gorgeous! The bestest pic yet that i have seen.
Love the pic of Ghost on the rock.. he is just such a neat fish. :)
Beautiful pond. I like the size of it.
Really great pond..Love the Koi, I wish mine could be bigger to handle them but I have to settle for what I have and be Happy..You did a great job..
Thank you for your replies....
Snapple....I haven't noticed any fish walking out yet...LOL...they have it too good here and are too spoiled to leave.
Bellie...I did see your pond pics and thought it was beautiful. I would like to know how you made the frame for your green net to be supported.
Fireant...it is 4.5 feet deep at its deepest...and holds somewhere between 5500 and 6000 gallons as far as I can figure.... It isn't a circle nor an oval...it just fits in the hole that was dug for it....Hard to figure exact gallons.
Terri.....You were and are my inspiration to have a pond in the first place. Without you I could never have posted these pictures. Thanks for stopping by.
VSWilliams...I have a small pond in my sunroom that has about 20 goldfish in it. I can get as much joy from them as I do from the Koi in the big pond. Any puddle you can call a pond is worth having...I can't imagine people not having a pond. I think it should be a prescription for good mental health. My worries and cares just disappear when I am working around or just sitting by my ponds. Better than drugs any old day!

My pond is a little green soup pot in comparison. I am leaving it alone for the next year or two, but I eventually I plan to install a larger one. I've learned a lot from this one.
