Are you supposed to cut off the seed heads on the tree peony....or doesn't it make any difference?

Well, if you leave them you might be able to grow some seedlings!

Oh/////thanks, you mean just take the seeds and try and make them germinate. This was at a friends' garden and she said someone told her NEVER to cut off the seed heads...I was wondering if it made any difference whether you did or not with the shrub itself...I know this lady will never do the seedling thing.

I never bother, but the seeds don't ripen here anyway

Thanks...I never bother either

I have a question about tree peonies. I apologize for hijacking the thread, but it seems the initial question was adequately answered. Here's mine: Is it true tree peonies are frequently grafted to herbaceous peony rootstock? If so, how does that work?

Hi Scott,

Yes, they are; the instructions usually given with the plant are to plant it deep so that the graft union is below soil level. A no-no for most plants, but with tree peonies it means the scion sends out its own roots above the graft, and eventually the entire plant is on its own tree peony root system.

Yes..Scott told me (in another thread) that the herbaceous peony I thought had reseeded was simply part of my tree peony...I kept thinking that they were reseeding...so mine must be planted too high. However...do the seeds germinate into a tree peony or an herbaceous one (in other words how do you get a tree peony from seed?) Or don't you. I am confused.

Tree Peonies will root above that graft; one of mine did. I had to move a 5' tree I had had grown for about 8 years to a new location because of construction two Summers ago. It died to the ground in Summer's heat but grew back and this spring producing two flowers identicle to the original grafted tree...

Tree peony (at least the wild form) is a species that will come from seed like any other species. I started one last year.

How did you do it? mine is not wild

I just planted the seed in the fall. But I'm no peony guy -- someone else here probably has better advice.
