Deodar Cedar wind resistance

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

How well does deodar cedar hold up to strong winds? I have wanted one for a long time but have read on various websites that strong winds will tear them apart. I know that a hurricane can tear down any tree, but I need it to at least be able to stand up to a tropical storm. China Fir holds up to wind extremely well but I like the look of deodar cedar so much better.

I can give you a sad experiance , concerning a deodara,I planted two to grow into a land scape plan, or rather dream, and I put two maples to train them to get height,18 Yrs. later when the cedars were olmost perfect,I cut out the , now teo maples to see my well framed land scaped subjects, evan had knowledgable friends remark on the beauty, and ,(best of all cleverness) of the plan. When you remove lateral support from a tree hope NOT to have a heavy wind any time soon. They came down like bolling pins ,and now I have the wide open spaces. Now to answer your question I have a solitude deodara , planted at the some time that has had much wind , and it is beautiful, and about 50' tall this is the 20th year.Mike

They are reasonably windfirm - I've soon occasional branches broken off, but not whole trees blown down.

It doesn't like constant wind at all though, and grows very slowly and poorly on exposed sites, with a very one-sided crown facing away from the prevailing wind direction.
