MACGILLIVRAYI

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Ok I found a new one I justr HAVE to own :)
Is there more then one variety of this? and.............Where is the best place to get it!

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Lorry, I have a large one that I lucked out and found in a local nursery, and just received a nice size cutting of Hoya megalaster from Belisle's Violet House. I noticed that they have 2 or 3 varieties of Hoya macgillivrayi listed for sale. I don't really know the difference, and though I know you aren't supposed to rely on leaves for ID, I am freaking out a little bit because the megalaster cutting leaves look identical to my Hoya macgillivrayi.

Anyone know, are the leaves similar if not darn near identical? The prices were pretty reasonable, and shipping unbelievably fast!! I ordered on Monday, they were closed on the 4th, and I got my box yesterday. I totally got caught, as I didn't even expect a shippment so soon, and DH brought the box in with the mail. Ha, I told him dinner would have to wait untill I took care of the cuttings! Have to say, he was a good sport. Hoyas are sort of like shoes....if you can get them in the house and in place, it is hard to tell if they are new, or just something that has been in the closet/jungle for a while.

Long Beach, CA

Yes, and the more plants you get, the easier it is to just mix them in. No one but the caretaker of them would ever know there was any more or less. Ha.
When you first get cuttings, you can just soak them in a bowl of Superthrive for a long time (even overnight) until you can get them rooting up. However, little plants almost have to be set free and watered as soon as possible. Hoyas on the other hand are VERY hardy and will wait till after dinner if need be. Ha. That said....I could never wait to get that box open and see my new toys.

Marcy, I was mildly upset that the box sat in my screened in porch for a couple to hours....no harm done. I haven't used superthrive, but absolutely love Eleanor's VF-11. I have used it for about 5 years. I have about 50 different hoyas, but since I grow strictly indoors, I have to set bounderies for myself, and my main one is no duplicates. That is why I am hoping that my Hoya megalaster cutting is not the same plant as the Hoya macgillivaryi I purchased last winter, it has tons of new growth, but no blooms. I would have to have nerves of steel (I think I have nerves of jelly) to wait until after dinner to open a box of Hoya cuttings.....

H. megalaster and H. macgillivrayii are different.... H. megalaster (at least my clone) has a sort of dimpley leaf...sort of like H. lacunosa but, of course, much larger. There are a number of clones of H. macgillivrayii...with larger or smaller leaves from eachother. I am sure Christine must have pictures of the two.....

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I got my package in from belisle also..but didn't get the mac.
I bought all the megalaster from them and any others I didn't have though :)

I NEVER find any hoyas at my local nurseries...with few exceptions. I did get a HUGE carnosa at one nursery and a HUGE kerri albamarginate at another.

I just love the Mac though...so do want to get at least one but have heard there are a couple different kinds out there :)

David Liddle lists 5.

Oh wow :) just another reaon to hope and pray for the certificate to come in the mail!

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Lorry, I give you permission ... nay, encourage ... to go INSANE on that order!! It's not something you get to do everyday, so go nuts!!! The only thing I have heard is that thinner-leaved hoyas don't do as well as the thicker-leaved hoyas on the long trip. Otherwise, your haul is gonna rock!!!

(laugh) Oh I will definitely go insane ..it seems to be my M.O.

That's one of the many reasons we like ya!!!

Ok, for all of you (Carol and others) who are more in the know than I , and to help convince me that I did not break my only rule (no duplicate plants...anything new is fair purchasing game), here is a picture of the plant that I purchased as Hoya macgillivrayi, then I will post the picture of the cutting that I received yesterday as Hoya megalaster. Perhaps they are diff, perhaps not, maybe I will just have to wait for flowers.
Thanks in advance,
Sara

Ok, here is the cutting that I purchased as Hoya megalaster. What do you think?

Uhhhhhhhh. Will take a picture of my H. megalaster and perhaps you can make that bold decision. .... LOL

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Carol, They are the same aren't they? DANG!!!! Oh well, I do want to see a picture of your H. megalaster though, can't get enough of looking at hoya pictures. Sure, you just laugh out loud, dang this zone 4a anyway..... DH says if he can't turn up the heat when it is -30, there will be no heated green house. Still don't think I would live anywhere else, Glacier Park, Yellowstone Park....trips over and through the Rocky Mountains, elk, bison, black bear, bald eagles. I might just plant the two together and then I will still have an open spot for another new hoya ;)
Thanks Carol,
Sara

Now...I just have 2 clones of H. megalaster, so there may be one that is your hoya...and the flowers will tell. This is the photo of the cutting I got from DL....looks like the other one I have too...

I find this is a very fussy hoya to grow. For two years I had a 2 leaf plantlette with a peduncle...it bloomed like a madwoman but never grew. So...(hold on to something, friends....) I cut the peduncle OFF...and it started to grow. DL says it doesn't seem to like a lot of airflow...so maybe that is why it started growing when I tucked it behind the bamboo .... ?

Laughing as I have about 14 different H. carnosa's that were supposed to be something else. All purchased when I was a complete idiot. Two H. macgillivrayii's wouldn't be bad. The one in the pretty yellow pot is certainly big and healthy looking.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Awh ..thanks Kitty :) I sure do like you guys and gals a lot too :)

on the Megalaster. ...It is supposed to be megalaster BIG MAC. I bought it...I figured they may be mislabeled but for that price :) I figured it was worth the chance.
I actually bought every cutting they had that I didn't own :)

the NEW GUINEA GOLD seems to be a really neat looking plant :)

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Hmm Lorry, that name almost sounds like a combination of meglaster and macgillivrayi. I must not have been paying attention. Have your plants come yet? I did order the new guinea gold too, and fungii, and ciliata. Only four. I need to pretend that I have some self-control. Ha. will you post a picture of your leaves when you have your plant, so that I can compare. I really am not too upset, space is just at a premium around here, thus my "rule of hoya" I have a large ficus triangularis that I potted into a huge pot, and then added all of my "non-hoya" houseplants to, everyone comments on it as it is FULL, and DH (have to give him credit, he is smarter than I realize sometimes) said " that is just so she can get more plants into the house" I never said a word to him either, but it did free up lots of pots, and possible hoya locations! ; )

Yup they came in saturday :) all are very healthy :)
I already had fungii so didn't get that but I can post a photo of my fungii for you to verify that is you want..though I don't have a bloom photo :) mine has not bloomed yet
though I did order everything I didn't have :)
I will try to get some pictures done today between nursery hopping :)

It may be some sort of hybrid..Who knows :) They are very pretty cuttings though :)

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Oh, yes Lorry, the cuttings are very pretty. Our nurseries aren't very plentiful, and very few have hoyas, so no fun shopping for me. I will be interested to see your megalaster and fungii photos, and any others you got, I wish their website had photos, but like you said, they weren't expensive.

Have fun on the hoya hunt! I do enjoy the excitement of coming upon a new plant, especially when I never really expect to.

Hmmmmm I thought that the BIG MAC was one of the H. macgillivrayi...or a hybrid of it. Little foggy there.

Trelleborg, Sweden

I also thought Big Mac was one of the macs, but wasn't sure about it. I'm more sure now that you also mention it.

Christina

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

It could be..they have it listed on both so one may be a typo :)

San Francisco, CA

Big Mac was a name used on macgillivrayi when it first started circulating. I don't think anyone knows for sure which one in cultivation now it refers to.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

HEY...(slapping side of head impatiently)...didn't Matt write a brilliant piece about this hoya...and it is up in the Stickies..... I just went there and O BOY DO I FEEL SILLY...(wink wink...sorry Matt...brain burb again) There is more information on that hoya than you ever thought of questions for. (Churchill did it, so I can too!!).
