syringa stems

Coeur D Alene, ID(Zone 5a)

Do syringas have shaggy bark? I just noticed that mine does, and it's not looking very healthy - I was wondering if they naturally have shaggy bark or maybe mine has a problem?

Different species have different bark texture. Some peel, others are stringy, etc. The common lilac Syringa vulgaris develops shaggy bark on mature stems.

Your plant might have borers, regardless of the bark texture. Set out an ash-lilac borer trap next spring and see who shows up. If you get many visitors, spray the stems.

thanks - is it to late this year to do?

Yes -- we begin trapping in late April here. All you can do now is try to keep it vigorous with mulch and adequate water.

Anyone know if you can root a syringa from cuttings? If so, any advice would be most welcome, and thanks!
