Rangoon Creeper

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I noticed mine had done that in the front garden. Some of the vine found it's way on top of the ground..and they rooted. Rangoons aren't the easiest plants to root from cuttings!

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8a)

I agree and I always dig the rooted ones when they are seen. I planted mine on a fence but near a row of ligustrum(sp) and they run throught them when they bloom. I'm afraid to move it as it has been in the ground for at least 10 years. Has anyone moved one and it was ok? I tried the cuttings and was not successful.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes cuttings are very hard. I have one growing. Seems like I can produce 1 cutting every couple of years.
I've moved Rangoons before, and it depends on what your goal is, as they are not a quick recovery. it will take 1 or 2 years for it to adjust to a new spot and bloom like your use to it blooming.

RJ - do they do ok in a pot?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, they do pretty good in a pot. They seem to be a bit more fussy in a pot though. Would recommend a clay pot, so that it doesn't stay too wet, and not too dry.
when I had one in a pot, I would set it on the ground in a place in the garden so the roots would grow through the pot. It seemed better able to regulate better. In fact I've noticed that on alot of vines, (at least for this climate here)

Wow I've finally got my Rangoon blooming.....i've always loved looking at everyone else's photos of it and mine has started blooming recently, I can't get enough of the colors OR scent....it's wonderful.....

Beautiful!!! Both blooms and photo in general...nice job!

I have never seen a pod on mine ...many years old now ...and grows about 30ft through the jacaranda tree ...I am off to look for pods

Hi Chrissy......former oz girl here, I didn't know Rangoon grew down there, I'll have to let my mum now.

I don't have seed pods either, but I'll keep a lookout.

It is fairly easy to make Spring cuttings from the tips ...in sandy mix keep misted in a warm shade place. Good luck with it. Yes it is a tropical vine and will grow in most places here ...I am about 40 miles inland from Sydney and it's warm enough here providing you let it romp away through a tree in a warm micro climate ...I get frost here but not in the position my creeper grows in. Nice chatting to an ex pat ^_^

Astgirl that's great news about your blooms!
Wow! Your flowers look larger than mine... I am pretty sure I have the single variety.
I hope I can find seeds too. Mine has been blooming almost continuously since July.
I keep looking and no sign of them...there were lots of tiny wasps/bees on the flowers this year ...fingers crossed.

I did manage to get two out of about 10 cuttings to root.

Next I will try the soda bottle method and see if that helps keep them moist enough to get a higher percentage to root. Would love to be able to offer these for trade next spring.

Any one know of a picture of seeds while still on the plant?

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Michelle,
My vine actually has seed pods. How cool is that!

Is it possible to see a picture of the seed pods?

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I'll take some tomorrow during the daylight hours.
I just took this one but it's 10:30 pm here.

Good for you Jan!!! I have been looking and looking at mine. Wasn't sure what I was looking for...lol!
It is still blooming...more and more everyday!
I searched and searched the net for pics of the pods on the plant and there aren't any!

Please when you get a pic in daylight post it in the PF!

Congrats!

Thankyou very much ...pass me a ladder please someone!

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL.
These are ground level so you won't have to work so hard. I have to watch Shellabella though as she lives in my area and has a BAAAAAAD reputation.......

West Central, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL! Jan!
Now who was it that kidnapped and trained me?

I may have already been there.....hehe.
Did you know your dogs love beef jerky?

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Don't let Shellabella fool ya. Her she is caught in the act at Molly Mc's daylily patch.

LOL...I still have that shirt !
The only reason Jan wasn't in the picture is because she was taking them...lol

Little did I know I was a candidate for future blackmail ! (JK)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

just remember...they are individual seeds...not seed pods...each one is a single seed.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks Randy. I saw that in a photo somewhere. I think it may have been yours.

Here are a couple of daylight photos.

Yes thanks Rj ...I remember now ...sorry I guess I am suffering a nanna moment here and there ...how is your garden recovering ...I hope it's doing ok ...
budgelover ...I will get up into the vine to have a good look ...I wonder if you need more than one vine for fertility? ...there are lots of branches shot up from underground ...I believe it needs to "settle in" for a few years then it shoots these long climbers outI think I may have not seen the seeds because they are too high up.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I received mine in a trade around 3 yrs ago. This is the first year it has bloomed. I haven't fertilized it as yet but I did follow Randy's advice and cut it way back the beginning of spring and it took off like lightening afterwards. Hasn't been a heavy bloomer but I will try next spring and see if it makes a difference. Any advice on starting the seeds if they develop?
Jan...

Ok then my garden bible says that it takes about 4 years as a shrub and then it will shoot out the long climbing growth ...I have been growing this one for over ten years so I can't remember when it took off ...but it is at least 30ft high now ...I have never trimmed it because it grows through a huge Jacaranda tree.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I've grown several ..and so far for me...3 years is the magic number for a fabulous bloom.

Those are good looking seed pods...may I reference them in my blog? I have a whole Rangoon creeper category...and don't have the seeds on the vine pictured.
It's been difficult for the seeds to grow to maturity ..as big as yours are. ...most of the times they die away before getting that big.

West Central, FL(Zone 9b)

I got mine in little 2.5 inch pots...in late 2006. Transplanted into 4inch pots in 2007 Spring.
Then in the ground late summer 2007.

One year later they are over the roof of the house and have been blooming continuously since at least July.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

That's probably normal too for a Florida, or mostly warm climate. It will take longer for geographic locations that experience a dormant period.

Chrissy..things are getting back to normal, although the "jungle" is more wide open. I've posted a progress thread here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/912339/

The insurance guy has advised that the roof will have to be replaced...*sigh*

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Randy
You can use the photos whenever you like. I do hope they make it to maturity. There are a few "bunches that I can see but it goes over the top of the old dog kennel it is growing on so I too will have to get the ladder to check the rest of the vine. I've never had luck getting cuttings to root so I'm hoping for a few seeds to start for some friends.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Thankyou.. I linked my journal to that specific picture..which is very convenient.
You can click the small post number and copy shortcut and link it to where ever...

Randy, What brand Hibiscus fertilizer do you use on your creepers?

I found some Espoma Plant Tone for Tropicals 4-1-5. Is that the one you use? The numbers seem a little low. I have looked for the thread where you were talking about it but can't find it. Thought I had it tagged but don't.

I may have lost one of mine over winter, One little stalk is trying to grow. The other one is looking good. Thought it was time to pamper it.

Randy, Just wanted to say thankyou for your advice on fertilizing the Rangoon Creeper, I did as you had suggested and this year it is just amazing. So many blooms. I just love this plant so much.

I just love the melon scent of this plant in the humidity. I have it placed right outside my lanai so it wafts inside when I open the doors, morning and evening it is equally strong. I was even over in the neighbors yard yesterday and we could smell it from there.

Here's a close up...beautiful colors

Wooo whooo - NICE Samantha!! I finally got one for myself!!!

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Mine isn't blooming yet but I cut it way back in early March. I do have a seedling coming up from a seed I put in a pot at work. It germinated under a flourescent light mounted under a shelf.

What fertilizer did you suggest RJ - I'm missing where that's at?
