IRIS wanted - in Memory of someone I NEVER MET

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone,
This is probably a really strange request but I want to plant some irises for a gentleman I NEVER even MET :-) but heard alot about. He died many years ago.

We live in a old farmhouse and one of the earlier/previous owners had georgeous gardens and his big LOVE was irises. However a later owner before us tore up all of the gardens, cut down most of the bushes and trees ( also a wrap around porch )

Anyway I have startet to buy and trade for iris to 'recreate' something that might have been there before ? spoke to his elderly widow several years ago and she couldn't remember names.Only colors i.e purples, pink, burgundies if I recall correctly ??
Would love to have some blooming size rhizomes.Named ones would be nice but not neccessary.Pictures/description would help though.

I have to trade
Garden phlox ,tall , in pink shades,
Lemon daylilies,
Violets in white/purple streaks,
Lily of the valley,
Mountain ash seedlings to small trees

Or I can postage .Thank You,
Brigitte

edited to add colors

I have the violets but yikes! They takeover! I am forever pulling them out as if they get to ruly they choke out the other plants. That being said if you want em I will dig em LOL

Concord, NH(Zone 5a)

Oh and what might ya have to trade. Just a small sprig of something

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I have 2 groups of irises that didn't bloom although all my others did. I am going to dig and replant them; I think they may be planted too deeply. I'm not sure of the colors anymore, but they are modern ones. E-mail me if you would like some of them and let me know when is the appropriate time to send them.

Bay, AR(Zone 7a)

I'm confused..... isn't the list what you have to trade? I'm not seeing where it gives the colors of the iris that the widow remembered.... ? Am I understanding right?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I have lots of old fashioned sky blue and a yllow with maroon falls..........

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Did it have the old white ones? I have the old white ones that used to be in soo many home sites - I have the name somewhere it is a species I gathered from just one home site. Anyway I would love some Lemon Lily in trade if you are interested.

Brigitte,
my heart goes out to you!

I can trade an old fashioned iris that is purple with the fragrance of rootbeer (been here since 1961) and a beautiful sky blue one that has also been here so long you can't see the soil beneath it.

I'd love a good size mountain ash baby tree...

praying for a swift resolve of your problem with employment and all the other stuff too.

God bless,
Janie

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone,
Haven't been able to get often on the PC lately for various reasons.I am really sorry.

nanners1955,
I had to smile YES the violets do take over and spread :-)They ARE a groundcover and I just love them.First sign of spring ! Just let me know what you want thru d-mail...small priority box or large Flatrate box ?

woodspirit,
I would be interested and I think it would be ok to plant them already.Anyway I have planted some and most of them look fine after a while.Let me know please what you want to trade for or postage ? I take my chance on the colors :-)

gardenergail,
sorry I confused you LOL .You are right I did forget to mention the colors. She said mostly purples, pinks, burgundies if I remember right.
But that's ok .I am sure this old gentleman is looking down on me from somewhere and won't mind if I plant the "wrong" colors.
Yes the plants above are the ones I have to trade right now.

Eclipse,
Your colors would be a wonderful addition to the irises I bought and have coming.Just the word sky blue sounds great and just brought a smile to my face. And the yellow/maroon will look good with some burgundy ones.
PLMK what you want for them ? size box etc.

Mitch,
hey it's good to see you here.I'll take some of the white ones if you can share ? will send you some lemonlilies. Are you going to hybridize like Leslie ?
BTW how did those lilyseeds do what I sent you a long time ago for your students ?

Janiejoy,
rootbeer huh ? our friend who passed away 2 years ago LOVED rootbeer.Too bad I can't tell him about these iris.
I will get a Mountain Ash to you before the weekend. That one is easy to dig and I can do it quickly,i will send it in one of those long triangular boxes,Ok?

Waiting to hear from all of you about the other tades .Will most likely be sending the boxes next week because we are having our 42nd wedding anniversary on the 15th and then head on down to Mass.for 4 days on monday / tuesday to see family.
BUT I definately will follow thru with my trades. Please read my feedback.

Thank You all for the good wishes and prayers,we need them,
Brigitte

They are doing great - I hope no one at school to watch them but they told me they watered so they chould be good!

Let me know when best to ship out to you - it was 106 today here so I am unsure if this is a good time to ship or if it might be to hot. I will have your ready when ever you are!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

What kind of Mountain Ash tree is it, I looked it up in the plant files and there are several, I have some small yellow Irises, like dutch I think, they have three lobes? Don't know anything about Irises.
Sorry to hear about your husband's job, hope everything works out for you, maybe there is a better job waiting for him out there, now he has the time to look for it :)

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

LeBug,
now you got me ...I don't know but can take a picture of it to post. It's raining right now...AGAIN !!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

We have had 3 1/2" and for the third day it is still raining, I love it when it rains and no lightning, I go around and take starts out of the gardens and transplant :)
Is the Ash anything like the Maple, roots and water wise? I would like to plant it by the drains to the house and septic tank (about 30ft. away), think that would be ok? That's all I really want to know.

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

Brigitte

I have some two tone purple iris that are heirlooms if you are interested in them.

Ruth

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

If you have the Ash still I would like to trade, I'll just ask around here about it, would you like to trade for two if you have them? I can send you as many yellow irises as I can get in one box, should be at least 10.
Just let me know, thanks,
Lea

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I have some old fashioned purple if you would some. I would be interested in the pink phlox. LMK
Janet

Hope things are going better for you soon! I will keep you in my prayers!

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Lea,
I never did have a chance to take a picture of the ash this afternoon.I run around taking pictures and pictures of my daylilies and crossed some, worked in the garden and when I remembered that I had promised you to take a picture for you so you could see how my "babies" look like my batteries had run down :-(( ..blushing...They are charging overnight.Actually I will send you bigger ones and YES I can send you 2.
Will get to it before noon and send you a picture thru d-mail.
***
Ruth,
I really would be delighted to have some heirlooms especially since most likely they are different from the ones I have coming.
What would you like to have in trade from my list above ? Please let me know thru d-mail.
And Thank you so very much for the offer,
Brigitte

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

D mail me please with the details of when to send these to you - I have your group marked out just need to know when to move!

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Janet,
yes of course I would :-) ..however the phlox JUST startet to bloom.
So I either can cut them shorter or send you smaller ones which have not set buds.
Please let me know what you would like to do in a d-mail i.e.size box etc.when You think would be a good time etc.

Thank You for the good wishes and prayers,
Brigitte

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Mitch you have d-mail

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Whatever you think is fine with me. Is phlox better planted at a certain time or will it matter. I don't know that much about the phlox. I can send you a nice sized box of iris...it will be next week, but they are rebloomers for me in the fall, so if you get them in now, perhaps they will bloom for you in the spring at least...they are iris from my great aunts farm...they are over fifty years old, and they are fragrant and very pretty...here is a picture...so whatever you think about the phlox is fine with me...I just love the stuff...I always see it and I have a couple of plants that I received in trade, one if purple and one is white...they smell wonderful!

Brigitte,
You don't have to send picture, just let me know when you would like me to send the irises, I'm going to try them any way, need cover for my shade garden, thanks so much for doing this, I take it you are in the exchange, I am. The 90's are here to stay for a while too, we could pack them in ice lol Just kidding of course. I don't really care about the size of the seedlings, will probably keep them in a pot for the first two yrs. anyway and baby them, I'm a mother hen lol Knock on wood, I have pretty good luck with trees. I could root some Corkscrew Willow starts if you are interested? I have one in the field that is 4yrs. old.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

JanetS,
you said you received some phlox in a trade before. How and when did your traders ship them ? PLMK...I haven't sent phlox before but many other perennials. But I saved you enough for a good size box also :-) LOVE that color purple.

Gardenergail,
Yes I have enough .You can have a priority box full of Lily of the Valley for your wonderful iris ,it is a beautiful shade of lavender, isn't it ?
Will get them out in the beginning of the week. Please d-mail me your address.
Have a good weekend everyone,
Brigitte

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Ok , 2 tradeboxes went into the mail today. My husband took them for me and brought more boxes back for my other trades next week.

LeBug and MitchF they are on their way.
The Del.Confirmations # are
0305 0830 0003 9250 1425
0305 0830 0003 9250 1449
I don't know which is which though because the Postal clerk didn't put names or zipcodes on the slips.

Mitch,
I dug up a couple of average clumps for you, blooming size to small baby ones .Trimmed them back ,rinsed them off and sent in dry newspaper like I have been receiving DL's lately.Keep in Mind the foliage is much narrower than other DL but they defiantely should bloom for you next season.

LeBug ,
Lea ,Your box went out too.I was able to get one of those tall ones and squeezed both trees in there.
Here are the pictures coming up.They are about 35 inches, one is a little smaller.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Lea,
here is how I wrapped them.Used some wet woodshavings to wrap the roots (Parks Roses used on my roses a few days ago ) then I wrapped it again in Saran wrap so the water won't leak.
Lea they are good size already, you can put them into the ground UNLESS ...LOL you WANT to baby them :-) Enjoy !

Thumbnail by Eglantyne
Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

You did a very good job there! Guess they will go in the ground, didn't realise they would be that tall, that's great.
I'll mail your irises out on Monday, thanks so much for the trade :)
Lea

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Lea,
meant to ask you how a corkscrew willow looks like ?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Those flower arrangements that have the crooked wooden branches in them? That is the c. willow branches, do you know what I’m talking about? They are really cool looking. I don’t have any starts but all I have to do is take a piece off and stick it in water and it roots in a couple of weeks, I could send you a few pieces if you like. Don’t plant them by your house, the roots will get into your pipes, they are like Maples, stretching for water. Wish I could get my camera to work :(

Bay, AR(Zone 7a)

Great! I will mail out on Monday, too.
Thanks, Gail

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I will check in my back dmail and see when I received the phlox..I am not sure..but we will get it worked out..
JanetS

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Janet,
sounds good ,no rush at all.I just want to make sure about when to send the phlox .After bloom I suppose but I can look thru some perennial books to get some knowledge :-)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Eglantyne, should I let these bulbs dry out before I send them, I have no experience sending bulbs, didn't really think about them being dry or wet, seems to me they should be dry, if so that might take a couple of days or can I just wrap them in newspaper after I dig them? Help lol
Lea

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Lea,
I think they are better send when they are a little dry and just in newspaper .I know iris don't like it too wet.Take your time,we will be going to Mass.on wednesday or thursday and coming back on the 24/25th ?

As for the trades I tried to get out today I think it has to wait until tomorrow ? if the heat goes down a little.Crazy weather ! first weeks and weeks of rain and now this heat, but it is in other states like that too so I shouldn't complain.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

It's so hot outside that I can hardly breath lol Heat index is going to be past 100 today and for a few more days, I already have these out of the ground, did it this morning, I will put them in a pot for when you get back :)
Thanks for the info, these must be dutch irises, the bulbs are small, I told you I don't have a clue about irises lol

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Got the trees today, the leaves are a little crispy but the roots look good, put them in some water to soak and will put them in a pot for a few days :) Guess I will baby them for a while.

I asked my neighbor about them and he said they are perfect for my back yard, it's his trees that are falling apart and I'm trying to replace the shade before I let him cut them down lol He also said they grow pretty fast, that's a good thing lol

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Since it has been so hot I am closing this until I get caught up sending my trades, then I will reopen again.

Bay, AR(Zone 7a)

Brigitte, I just wanted to let you know that I have failed to get your iris in the P.O. yet, but I should be able to get them dug this eve and mailed tomorrow so you can HOPEFULLY receive by the weekend. If it's Monday, they'd probably be alright but I still don't want them to sit, smothering in a box that long.... :-))
