Oh my gosh.. I think I'm going to cry!

There is several full flower bed yards in our neighborhood. One in particular, I really love to watch was a couple blocks away. She was always changing something and decorating her porch too with an old bench with flag pillow etc.
Then they sold.......I has broke my heart to see the yard in the Texas heat. I think the new owners took out a pond or something in the backyard. They piled up sack concrete forms that were beds or water feature I am sure. Now they are remodeling the inside. I figure it is only a matter of time they tear out the front yard and put in sod!! They don't appreciate the flowers I am sure because they are going un watered and weeds are appearing. I hope the prev. owner moved out of town, because she would cry if she drove by now.
I can't see putting in anymore than I have in front, and I have a lot of room to grown in the back. But it would be nice if my lot was smaller and I could go all prennials. One of these days I am going to put a tour of my digs on here, probably after retirement (448 working days, but whose counting?)

Maybe you can go over and ask the new neighbors if you can dig up some of the plants if there are any there you like. If they don't care about them, they would probably let you have them. :-) Bring them a pie or something, too, and welcome them to the neighborhood... sweeten them up first. LOL

Oooh Sheila, I got my DH a retirement countdown clock that he used for the last couple of years. A birthday gift that he loved. It just made him feel so good to know there was an end. We celebrated when it went below major numbers. 1,000 days, 900 days, 800 days, etc. The time went really fast at the last. You need one.
We've decided that when we have to sell our house, we will interview prospective buyers. No sales to non-gardeners.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have given that some thought Marylyn, but with my current back problems, I don't think I could dig what I would want to. But I may stop by and ask if they are going to pull it out, and see about getting seeds and cuttings.

CJ, That is so true, it seems to go fast as you start seeing the numbers go. I have an Excel program that was created by another employee in the IT group. It takes into account our holidays, etc. We just plug in our day of projected retirement, and it gives us the "actual wkg days left". But it also gives years, hours, weeks, months, and number of payperiods too! LOL! My target date is May 31, 2008, or 49 pay checks away! LOL!

Wow, Shelia. That sounds like a great little program. He/she probably could have sold it to the public, made a little money, and retired a lot earlier!

But since she worked for the City it belongs to the City, you know how that goes.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Sure do....
You've metnioned your back problems. Have you had an accident, or... Or would you rather not discuss it? I have dealt with back problems a long time.

Remember me limping at the RU in CS? It happened Easter weekend, not sure what I did, but after taking a nap I could hardly walk. I had set down in the floor playing with the kids earlier and bending over helping with Easter Egg hunting. Thought it was my hip, but it turns out I have two herinated disc in my back. After a lot of therapy visits, and meds, I feel good unless I miss the meds or try to do too much. I am pleased with the progress up to now. But those things don't go away, so I never know.
I used to enjoy mowing and trimming the yard, it was my thing. But the DH has had to take that over. I can still sit or kneel to pull weeds, and plant though. Really the more activity I do it seems to hurt less, I just can't bend over repeatedly, lift too much or push/pull. He has done a super job, no complaints there, just jealous.
Sorry about the person on your thread Marylyn, hope you don't mind.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't mind. :-)

See Marylyn - you really are a sweetie. And I apologize for going off-topic...

How long do you get to keep the sign? Have these people talked to you, or did they just plop it and walk away? It will never happen to me, so I have to know all the little details! LOL

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I get to keep it until they choose the August Yard of the Month. They usually do that the first weekend of the month. And, yep, although the president actually goes to our church and knows us, she didn't say a word.. Just drove up, stuck the sign in the yard, and drove off. LOL They'll post our name in the little newsletter that the "secretary" puts out every few months. Did I mention it is a very small neighborhood? I'd guess about 80 houses... Maybe. :-)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

1 out of 80 - that's pretty darn great!

Hey your yard looks better than my friends, and her neighborhood is pretty large. Her backyard is beautiful, but they say they only judge on the front yards. You would win there hands down too.

Good going Marylyn! It even looks good all the way from New Braunsfels--where I am and will be until Aug.

Congratulations Marilyn! What an accomplishment that you can really feel proud of. My neighborhood doesn't do yard of the month, but one time last spring, I received a letter from the HOA. I thought it was a nasty-gram, but it said that our yard was very pretty, it stood out from the surrounding yards, and our yard should set an example for the other neighbors to strive for. I almost burst into tears, and I even thought about framing that letter! OMG, it was cool.

Of course about 2 months later I DID receive a nasty-gram about grass and weeds growing in the expansion cracks of my driveway and the sidewalk. Technically it's not even my sidewalk; it belongs to the "common area" but I still have to take care of it being on the corner lot. Thankfully the letter was sent probably the day before I weeded, so by the time I received it my yard had already been tidied up, back to the YOTM standards it was before. Ha ha...

Anyway, good for you! Your little piece of earth looks absolutely beautiful.

A tip of my country bonnet to you my dear for a beautiful job.....Congrats
