Oh my gosh.. I think I'm going to cry!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

A car just pulled up in front of my house and a lady came out and stuck a white sign in my yard. I went out after she left and it says "Yard of the Month!" I'd think it was a joke, but I know that the lady in question is the president of our little neighborhood Civic Association! Now I have this overwhelming urge to get out there and weed before someone on the committee takes a closer look and realizes they made a mistake and they need to take the sign away! LOL I'll take pictures later and you can see Josephine's frostweed, Ted's coleus, Pat's thyme, Amy's dianthus... etc. :-) Right now I'm in shock!

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

That a way to go Marylyn we are proud of you. Now go pull them weeds. LOL

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Congrats!! Just tell them the weeds are native...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Marylyn! Congratulations!!!! That is just wonderful.
Josephine.

I can't wait to see pictures. I love looking at the best type gardens. Boerne does it here but because I live outside of city limits, I would never even be considered.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

My yard would never be chosen to be on a garden tour or anything like that, renatelynne, so you may be disappointed in the pictures. I didn't think I'd ever get one of these signs in my yard... But it IS a very small neighborhood! LOL

Here's the yard from across the street...

Frostweed from Frostweed, Coleus from TARogers5, and chives from.. Patrob, I think? Or was it silverfluter? Either way, they're delicious! LOL

Salvia from Patrob and a better view of Ted's coleus. I think I need to move the salvia to a brighter spot as soon as it gets cooler.

well deserving...and no grass

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Hey! What's wrong with grass? I see some =).

Marylyn you have done AWESOME girl!!!! I love how private and shaded you've made your entry. Now you need a swing to sit out there and enjoy it!!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

way to go, Marylyn. Your yard is beautiful!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I made a collage with the rest of the pictures so you wouldn't have to keep clicking on things. LOL Here are (from the top left and then counter clockwise):
A daylily that I bought at a sale (that I found out about from notmartha!) last year, where I met Vossner and dstartz.
Caladiums that I bought at a coop last month.
Thyme that I got from silverfluter at the CTRU last November.
Texas sage - that was actually already here, but I've learned a lot about Texas natives in here!
Firecracker plant (I think?? Or is it butterfly weed?) from the CTRU
Caladiums from a trade with Badseed
Frostweed from November and coleus from the TXRU in April
Pink Skullcap that I got while shopping with dmj1218

Just to the upper right of the sign in the middle picture you can see the penstemen that I got from Frostweed in April, too. :-)

Robin, the house next door is going to be up for sale in a couple of months. Your yard is much nicer than mine will ever be, and in this neighborhood people will appreciate it!! :-)

Porter, TX(Zone 9a)

That's wonderful!

I've taken away some great ideas for my new yard.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Congrats Marylyn, your hard work paid off!

Stephenville, TX(Zone 8a)

A hearty congratulations to you Marylyn!! I am paying close attention. This gives me something to aspire to and further supports my desire to remove vast quantities of St. Augustine grass from my front yard and fill it with flowers and plants.

Way to go!!!!! ;-))

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Marylyn, it is so sweet of you to give us all credit for those plants we happily shared with you. You took very good care of them, and it makes me feel very happy to have contributed to your success in some small way.
Josephine.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

A Big Congratulations Marilyn!!! I know you must feel so proud. ;) Your yard is beautiful and very deserving of the recognition.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Beautiful yard, Marylyn! If there are weeds, they blend right in and look great. Congratulations!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Great yard...Marylyn! Quite an achievement...and well earned by the looks of your great pics... :)

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

The rock borders look great and I love the flower beds. Ted

Frisco, TX(Zone 8a)

marylyn, Congratulations to you for all the hard work. Your yard DOES deserve recognition. It's lovely!!
Several years ago, at our house in Austin the doorbell rang at dinner time and I reluctantly got up to answer it, expecting it to be some salesman. It was the "landscaping committee" and we had won the "yard of the month " ....That was better than any other present I got that whole entire year, so i know just how you feel like you want to cry happy tears..nancy

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Marylyn, when I first started reading your post I thought you had won the publishers clearinghouse prize, and I thought 'It's real!" But, winning 'yard of the month' is much better, right?

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Way to go! Congrats!!!!!

Hey Marilyn! Way to go! Awesome!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL MUCH better, fly_girl!

Thank you for your kind words, everyone. :-)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Almost missed the great event! It looks great in front of your beautiful yard.
Guess you have to keep it there for the month?
My co-worker was YOTM last month in a local suburb, and I thought she was going to kill herself! She went home and mowed and weeded, etc. every evening. Made sure everything was perfect everyday because someone might come by to see who had yard of the month because they printed it in the water bill. LOL!
When I came over to see it and get my DH to take pictures for her, I saw this huge plant with odd shaped leaves, asked her about it, but she wasn't sure what it was. She said it had just come up in the new flower bed. On the way home I saw the same type leaf and did a search and sent her the link. She was caring for a 7 foot tall Ragweed plant! LOL! She still hasn't cut it down either, so don't sweat a few little weeds, enjoy your lime light!

ROFLOLOL!!! Oh, Sheila, that's hilarious! Poor thing.. I'm glad they don't print our address on the utility bills. Hopefully no one will get curious enough to get close enough to notice the nutgrass. LOL

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Marylyn, I almost didn't read this thread because I thought it was about something unhappy that would make me cry, and I didn't want to feel unhappy right now. But your name on it made me peek, and I'm so glad I did. These are happy tears for a really nice person who deserves the award!!! Congratulations!!
CJ

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

CJ, Awww.. I'm sorry. I should have thought of a less dramatic title. :-) I'm glad you looked anyway (and that you called me nice despite that picture of you at the RU that I posted.. LOL) Speaking of which, are you and Sheila_FW both coming to the RU in November? I'm thinking I should make t-shirts - one for you that says "I'm not Sheila!" and one for her that says "I'm not CJ!" What do you think??

And thanks. :-)
~ Marylyn

Edited because I'm getting my Sheilas and Sylvias confused! Sheesh...

I think it was CJ and me that they kept getting confused. LOL!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Right.. You get to wear the "I'm not CJ!" shirt. LOL

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

Marilyn, great yard! I know you're proud, and I think you have a beautiful example for all of your neighbors!

don't think I could ever get "YotM" because I have so much stuff growing in my beds... and in my neighborhood, the prevailing design is totally sculptured...

As for the teeshirts, if you need a reference, try "NOTMARTHA"!!!

Congrats again, girl! Good Job!!

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Woohoo! Way to go Martha!

We moved into a new neighborhood/subdivision in February and they have "Yard of the Month". I also joined the Landscaping Committee so I get to vote. I was surprised to see that the yards that have won in the last few months have been not super formal.... More a mixture of Perennials, annuals, landscaped bushes, and several decorative pots with plants. Being in an HOA community, it's nice.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Marylyn - Oh, I forgot about the picture! Well, I guess you're forgiven. LOL
Those shirts would be so cute!!! Funnee!! Yes, it was Sheila. But, unless they've changed the date I can't come to the RU. :-((( We have already paid for a cruise with a bunch of people from church. And as much fun as I think that will be, I would much rather be at the RU. Seriously.

Congratulations Marylyn!! You sure do deserve it. Your yard is georgous.

Ligonier, PA(Zone 6a)

You and your yard really "DO" deserve that sign!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Thank you all so much! I'm very excited about it. I have finally stopped looking out the window every couple of minutes to see if I just dreamed it all or if the sign is really there. LOL

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Wow, I'm late hopping on the congrats train but wow, way to go! Your yard looks great-it's definitely a plus for the "grass-free approach". And how cool is it to get kudos for all the hard gardening work, instead of people thinking you're a bit wacky (or maybe that's just me).
