Eradicating unwanted saplings??

Mattoon, IL(Zone 5b)

I have a walnut tree growing in a flower bed I am working on. I tried to dig it up but it is too deep. It is a few feet tall the trunk is maybe an inch in diameter. What will kill it without harming the soil?

Cut it off and dab a little Roundup concentrate (undiluted) onto the stump. Apply the Roundup right away while the wound is fresh.

I would add that, depending upon what you want to grow in the flower bed, you might need to dig down a foot or so and cut it off (and treat it) at that level. Walnut roots exude a phytotoxic chemical (Juglone) that can inhibit growth of some other plants.

Grub hoe would be the tool of choice for me. Since it's only 1" in diameter, you should be able to chop & dig it out without too much difficulty.

Another name of the tool I'm refering to is mattock. It has a wide blade on one end and a pick on the other. Combined with a Pulaski you should have it out in about five minutes--with no chemicals.

Thanks for the advice. I know about the juglone. There is a black walnut tree about 8 feet from the flowerbed which is no doubt the reason this one has sprouted up. So far the things I have growing are fine.
