What is blooming for you today?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Deborah, my gardens are far from paradise, lol, I personally think it near impossible to have paradise in GA when we have a drought. I went out this am to try and weed and was soaking wet in 20 minutes. With my hot flashes it's too dang much for me, lol!

Which reminds me, I forgot alot--will add to my previous post and stick it in my Diary--this thread is great reminder Beth!

Sharon, I can't believe you didn't get rain!! I went to visit the market downtown when the drops started I rushed home without buying a thing!

I have my PB Shrub (http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/772/index.html
in mostly sun with late afternoon shade. If you ever get to tiG's you ought to see hers!! 20 ' covered in blooms and butterflies and scenting the entire yard, it also has a large canopy. I think we counted 5-6 different type butterflies last July.

Beth, my Milk & Wine was one of my first swap plants and I can't remember who gave it to me (bless their heart) does this photo help? Hmmmn, may it was from JT?? http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/514/index.html

I have a purple cone flower that is blooming for the first time this year, a crape myrtle, star jasmin, some canna lilies ... and I'm sure some other things. The lack of rain sure is getting old, though.

Vi, your yard does sound very beautiful. I bet it smells heavenly. :-)

Today the crinum I have came out. It's a very dark burgundy/pink/purple color. I have no idea what it is. I bought some crinums on eBay and this was an "extra mystery" bulb the seller gave to me. It's gorgeous!

The Salvia Mulberry Jam is also blooming it's head off. At least I think that is what it is...it's very tall with similar color flowers to the crinum. Dark Cerise I guess could be the color. Darker than magenta.

I realized today no helenium bloomed. Boo Hoo. I bought her last year and she did well. Several asters up and died this year for no apparent reason, and I guess the helenium bit the dust too.

I don't know what's wrong with my camera (operator error???) but this is my attempt to photograph another unknown hibiscus. It was given to me by a gentleman who was afraid he was killing it, and has bloomed continuously since I planted it. What a joy it is to see it every morning with a bloom or two!

Now this is my second attempt at "raising" a Bouganvillea. The first was a beautiful potted plant I bought myself at Lowe's a few years ago, just 'cause I thought it was pretty. I didn't have a clue about how to care for it. So when it died I was heartbroken, but not to be deterred. I got some rootings from a fellow on eBay and read a little about these little babies, and look at it go now!!!

This is a scarlet runner bean - neat little fence runner, I just wish the flowers were larger. Pictures on seed packet were a little misleading, or maybe I'm starving it. I still like it and so do the bees. They hop (fly) from this to the sedum.

You are actually quite lucky to get any bloom off of that scarlet runner in the heat we are having. I grew them at my Mom's in Canada on a fence, and they did beautifully. But it rarely got above 83 in the summer...

My most recent bloomer is Passiflora lutea, collected from a friend's lot at Lake Martin in Alabama. The blooms are smaller than a dime, yellow green, a perfect miniature passiflora. The vine is much less robust than the more common blue species.

These poor little roses were here when we moved in, very neglected and really pitiful. I have worked really hard to save them, fertilizing them every two weeks and watering, picking off the beetles, spraying for all kinds of baddies; so when they bloom I feels so good!! Just wanted to share... the blooms are really small, maybe they will be larger next year!! The pinks and yellows have new buds so maybe blooms in a few days!!

Emma,
How far from the Atlanta area are you....I have several things I would love for you to have if you aren't too far to come and get them...I live in Braselton, Georgia...it is about 45 miles north of Atlanta. I most likely have some small crepe myrtle, and perhaps a few other trees or shrubs that would interest you. I have two very large Weigela I have been begging someone to take...they would have to be pruned and then lifted. But anyway, I would love to help you accumulate some things for your yard if you are interested.

Wow, just looked at the map, you are way south. Are you planning on coming North any time soon? LOL Offer is still good. Let me know what you think.

Cordele, GA

Whoopee! My second clump of crinum is blooming. It is a pale shell pink. The scape is more slender and the number of buds is fewer than on the burgundy one, but I am happy because it is a different plant - and I don't have to cut down the dogwood for more sun.

Beth

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Yeah Beth! That is great!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Congrats on your crinum. Just shows what a wonderful green thumb you have Beth!

Cordele, GA

Not a green thumb, a dirty thumb and fingers, not to mention a smear across the face and a thoroughly disreputable favorite tee shirt that will never look clean again. If I used enough bleach to get rid of the dirt stains, it would eat holes in the fabric.

My co-op plants came in today and we are getting a bit of rain. I will set them out bright and early tomorrow and water them in well. They should have time to take hold before winter slows everything down.

This is the most blooms at one time I have had on this plant since I planted it. Unknown hibiscus.

I have no idea what this is, but it's at the edge of a bed with two dahlias. Is it a hurricane lily? If it is, it's one I planted last year that never came up.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

No it's not a hurricane lily. Don't know what it is. Here's a hurrican or spider lily. Not quite time for them to bloom yet. They usually start showing last August or Sept. It won't have any leaves just the stem with the bloom. Some call them naked ladies.

guardians,

It looks like a zephyranthes (rain lily, atamasco lily, zephyr lily).

Thomson, GA

That's it, rain lily! Thanks for the reminder. It looks kinda pitiful from the heat. It's a wonder anything is blooming.

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Mine are in a plastic bowl and bloom off and on. Here is a picture of a bunch of them in Thailand - white on the left and pink on the right (looked like they had recently planted the pink ones).

I am hanging there, not able to do too much outside. Which is a disappointment. But I just keep on ticking! Thanks for asking..

Thomson, GA

My first Gardenia bloomed today! I just planted them in mid June so I really didn't expect much this year, so I am SO excited!! Just one lonely bloom, but, oh, the fragrance is amazing.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

I have a few scattered blooms on mine as well...they do that sometimes, a second bloom period, but not as heavily as the first of course. They are wonderful!

Thomson, GA

Well, I've waited a long time for this dahlia to bloom. Not really, it didn't get planted until late June, but I'm very impatient! Don't know her name, but love the color.

Beautiful color! I have Lantana, some dahlias, some daylilies, some canna, and a few early zinnias now. I will try to take some pictures later today. Have a great day everyone...The weather here is BEAUTIFUL and COOL!

Marietta, GA

Hi Folks, boy am I glad to find you all!!! Folks, I love all the flowers you are growing and have spent a small fortune trying to. I need HELP with my English inspired garden that has withered away. I just tore out the last of my drought beaten ground covers -lantana and what-cha-ma-call-it (geeez), and my died out dahlias and lilies too. This garden is actually the grass that separates two Townhouses on the front. My neighbors are renters who claim they don't know how to cut grass or garden. So, garden was first created over cultivated uncut grass 2 yrs ago.

All of the middle section (about 10' wide by 30' long) doesn't belong to me---only about 2' in does---lol. I came close to just planting bamboo this summer but I didn't want that to take over all the grasses and crepe myrtle. All that's left TODAY are my ornamental grasses---pampas near the curb; at the head where the houses join is a crepe myrtle, differing grasses by height, yucca, larkspur with monkey grass border. In between nothing. No more English ------although it was/has been gorgeous. Recent diagnosis changed my life drastically where I had no choice but to leave my career. With little energy left, I want to create something really neat to compliment existing plantings but less maintenance on the front yard. I will be cultivating the soil this week in this Townhouse in Marietta. Any ideas you have are greatly welcomed and much appreciated. ---jzz
