True RED Crepe Myrtals

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

I just hate going to nurserys and asking about something and watch them get this glazed look come over their face. They look around as if they know what your asking and finally say they are either out of it or that they don't carry it. You can tell they don't have a clue as to what your talking about. Don't these people keep up to speed on their own business?

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Yep Rainbow gardens is my third choice for plants but only because there are two good nurserys here in Boerne that are closer. Both here off I10 in Boerne know their stuff also. It is so nice to go in and ask things and get answers.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

What are the names of those nurseries in Boerne?

Scoolie: at least it's easier to ask at the nurseries than the box stores! Good grief, they REALLY don't have a clue. =)

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

ceejaytown

how long would it take a plant to mature if I made cuttings from a dwarf or mini crepe myrtal?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Tir_Na_Nog

i don't know

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm with Tir_, renatelynne,...where are these nurseries in Beorne? I'm somewhat close to Beorne near Helotes and would love to find a few more knowlegeable nurseries that carry unusual natives.. :)

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Boerne Barkley Nursery 32450 Ih 10 W, and Hill Country African Violets and Nursery just about opposite side of street.

I usually get off at boerne stage road (NOT the one at Leon Springs) and drive north. (BOTH sides of the road are two way)

Lots of people think that Hill Country African Violets ONLY has Violets but they have something like 12 greenhouses full of stuff. I sometimes like to just go and wander.

If someone plans on going after work or on the weekends let me know and I can meet you. Also for people on the SA swap list. see more about the nurseries on that thread.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I got time to venture that way on either Monday, tuesday, wed. next week (24,25, or26) I think I will try and visit boerne.

calvin

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

cool. let me know... I could leave work a little early if you wanna meet. or just wait until the swap. whatever works.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

yeah....I may hi-tail it over there myself one of these days.....sounds interesting...and close!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Rainbow Gardens eh? I did a search for this on the internet, sure does look like the best nursery around SA! WOW! Wish I could LIVE THERE!

http://rainbowgardens.biz/introduction.htm

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Ya see.....I told ya...lol...Wish we could do a nursery tour there as well during the swaparoo....but its a bit out of the way, I reckon.

Speaking of myrtles...my wee Dynamite is now making itself comfy in the front bed. :) Just in time too....blooms are starting to break out alllll over it.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

TxT,

That was fast for the blooms already! I almost ran over to Rainbow Gardens but from my location the 6 acre one was closer (and still far) and I think you said the 10 acre one on Bandera was better, didn't you?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Tir_,
To tell ya the truth, I've never been to the one on Thousand Oaks...since Bandera is right down the road if I follow Braun over 1604. I have a team member at work who use to work out at that one and told me that its quite nice...but I just stick to Bandera, esp on Sundays...lol. (My usual nursery day)

One of these days I'm going to get out that way...because I also hear that their stock is a bit different at each of the two nurseries.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

TxT..... just got me one. Went to Rainbow gardens today and they still had about 7 left in the one gallon 6.99 like you said. Snatched it up and never let go until I had to empty out my walllet to pay. lol.

It had one main stem and a little offshoot so when I got home I cut the offshoot out with a little roots and stuck it in a pot. Fingers crossed it will live and I will have two Dynamites.

calvin

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

hey....glad to hear that ya made it out there..calvin...They have a pretty large selection of myrtles....roses too...if you're into that sort of thing...but honestly, I just love that place... :)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Years ago (about 20) Texas A&M came up with a red crape that was more maroon than pink...natch! It's beautiful..and I think it's called Texas A&M red. Could that be what you're talking about? Most of the ones I see here are still like "pink" in my crayon box!!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Whom were you asking Connie? Dynamite is definately a RED that's darker than fire engine so it's not to shocking.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I was attempting to answer your question, Tir. Is Dynamite the name of the red you were searching for? I, for one, think a pure, shocking red crape would look great...but then I love brilliant-colored flowers as opposed to the soft colors. But then, I might be onto another thing in a few years...like an all-white garden! :) (last BUT...who could afford to change it all out??? Wow...plants are so much more expensive than 10 years ago when I last was really into gardening.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Oh yes, it was a name of one I was looking for.

Wish I coulda been a homeowner and into plants 10 years ago then! I went to Rainbow Gardens in SA today, recommended, but thought the plants were a bit to expensive!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I've seen a lot of mentions of Rainbow Gardens...whereabouts is it? (In SA, but what quadrant of the city?)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

The one I goto is on Thousand Oaks. Take hwy281 north and exit Thousand Oaks. Go right on Thousand Oaks, It is on the left hand side about 3/4 to 1 mile from hwy281. You have to look real good the sign in the front is low to the ground, about eye level when sitting in a car.

good luck and happy shopping. I know that there is about 2 Rainbow Gardens inSA.

calvin

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I went to the one that's 6 acres by Jones Maltsberger area. I don't know if it was the heat getting to me or what but didn't enjoy it. It was large and broken up, few signs, many things not priced, the walkways were uneven and muddy and wet. Their website is superb and perhaps the one TxT frequents (where you went Calvin) is better. For the area I live Milberger's is best.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Calvin....who gave me the cannas? Meiyu? I need to email and thank her!!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

awww....sorry to hear about your visit...Tir_... :( Well, I hadn't been to that one before...the one on Bandera is sometimes muddy too....since they seem to be waterin' everything when I go in the early mornings. I find that they have prices on most of their things and tho your right..they are a bit more expensive I guess its worth it to me since they have the natives that I'm lookin' for....and their plants are real healthy. I'd like to try Milberger's too...I've seen it..but I've never been... :)

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I think they have a beautiful website and they certainly know their gardening info! I thought their inside store was way better than Milberger's. They were selling the same brand roses as Lowe's carries...that Jackson & Perkins. I was hoping to buy from another grower this time as my Lowe's Jackson & Perkins roses all seem susceptible to black spot! They did have the Dynamite but I couldn't find little ones but the place is so huge I didn't walk it all.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

connie--- yes meiyu sent you the cannas. I have not gotten in touch with her in awhile but I am sure she remembers the ones that weren't labeled. And the rainbow gardens that I goto is considered north SA. You would need to go south on hwy281 from loop1604 and I35(got west on 1604)since you are coming from Austin. Then take thousand oaks(about 1 mile from 1604 and 281 interchange) and go left on thousand oaks under 281. Hope that helps. Of course, you could just call me when you get to SA and I can meet you then car pool there. Also, Milbergers is on the way here. You can see it off of Loop1604 and Bulverde exit.

txt and tir-- The rainbow gardens I goto had all their dynamites inthe back of the lot. I have noticed that there are alot of nurseries that are starting to label the prices of the plants right on the container, usually in white chalk or marker and when watering it starts to wear off. I usually have to find myself asking the price.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

hmm....I wish I could pick up a Dynamite for ya, Tir_....I think calvin said that they had about 7 left for 6.99. I don't think it would last well in a black plastic pot until early October tho, lol....And I never seem to get any free time except at night most of the time...or I'd meet ya somewhere to give it to you. Mine is just now beginning to show off a bit...and it seems happy with the strong afternoon sun that it is getting. It's definitely a deep red....about as red as my lipstick, lol....but like ya say...not too shocking...

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Txt--- I can try to help. I have alittle time on MONday and will try to make it over there and pick up about three. I am sure that others would like to have a dynamite aswell. If they are still there I will get them. Besides I would like to try again at cuttings. I tried with my white crepe but lost all 12 cuttings, they would not root. course I tried only in water. I need to try rooting hormone and dirt. I took 2 cuttings from the dynamite I purchased and have them in water. I am persistant, for some reason I feel that cut and place in water will work for any plant.......lol.

If I should not try and help dmail and say forget about it. I usually see my dmail before I even check postings.

calvin

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Anything to help another gardener....calvin, kind of ya to offer... :) Let's see what Tir_ has to say...lol. I'd like to try that cutting thing myself....I didn't know you could do that with crepes....and the idea is definitely interesting... I think I'll wait until my wee Dynamite is a tad bit bigger. Since today is my nursery day, I'm real tempted to head out to Rainbow...but I don't have any room for any more unless I start my project early...lol And with new plants and cuttings coming from the SA swap....I may have to curtail the nursery fever for a while...lol

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Calvin/TxT,

Yes I did see that white chalk pricing! That was helpful at least, makes sense to do it.

You and TxT are both SO KIND to consider going all that way for me!!!! I think I can find one close to where I am but DH is wanting pink ones as he was thinking the red might look funny against our salmon colored house? But I admit I want a country property and some DYNAMITE out there some day!!! I have 2 neighbors, one has a dark red (don't know the name?) and the other a dark watermelon pink, both said I could take cuttings so I picked up some root hormone and dirt.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol..well...I ended up going to Rainbow anyway, despite the humidity and heat...with my sister. I actually talked HER into buying alot since I can't fit hardly anything else in my gardens...lol...Now she's mad at me..lol :D

They only had 2 of the big 69.99 Dynamites and about 1 of the 6.99 left...Goodness...but they are popular..! A few of the Red Rockets were left tho... I don't blame your DH about the red versus pink idea, Tir_.....pink would probably look better.....but that deep red sure is pretty...lol

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I got it. Great and best of luck with the cuttings Tir. I seem to have no luck with them but I will never give up.

Txt, are you like me and find as much enjoyment watching others buy plants as buying them for yourself. I always catch myself smiling at the checkout line while watching the person infront of me pay the some Beautiful plants. hehehehe........... I got to watch that, someday that person infront is going to think something is wrong with me or them or the plants or something :)

calvin

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lolol calvin.....I know wha cha mean...Are you sure you weren't at Rainbow today? A guy was just smilin' away at my sister and I in line...listenin' to us teasing each other about her big purchases and my little one....lol.....

Yes...I do enjoy the whole shopping experience...Its just relaxing walking the grounds out there....but lordy, it was HOT and HUMID out there this AM..... ;p

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, my little 6.99 Red Dynamite seems to be adjusting really well to its new home and is now starting to show off for me... :) So glad that I picked one up when I did....

It is so beautiful. Wish I had one. :o(

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

DH and I stopped at Lowes off the Belt way 2 days ago and they had 5 gallon red rocket and 5 gal dynamite for 8.00.

The one in Baytown had crepe myrtles 1gal-1 dollar, 2 gal. 2.00, 3 gal. 3.00 but no reds. This Lowes is 2 0r 3 exits off the beltway coming off I-10.

They were regular 16.97 for 8.00. DH bought me one of each for my birthday. He should not have because of our money situation, but he insisted to get them for my birthday. Waiting for Dynamite to bloom. I am excited.
