Picea glauca '4th Hand'

Niles, MI(Zone 5a)

I just bought this tree today and the tag only had the above name + "New tree rarely seen". No one on site could give me any information about it.

Does anyone know about it. I'd greatly appreciate any help.

Guess they've only got 4th hand knowledge of it - try to find someone who knows it first hand

A Garden of Conifers by Robert A. Obrizok ( an excellent and essential ref for any dwarf conifer enthusiast, IMHO ) lists a white spruce under the name 'Fort Ann' as being a large cultivar, very sparsely branched. Knowing the state of confusion that sometime exists in the trade, it's conceiveable that could be your tree. Check the size of the leader and the amount of branching, plant it and stand back. I see a hen that lays golden eggs in your future. Ken

Hmmmm. That makes sense. It's very gangly and looks like it's on the edge of being a distorted monster. Right up my alley. Thanks for the deciphering. I think you win!

Here's a picture I found of it on the web. Looks like it's the one.

Plant that monster next to your neighbor's kid's window. Moo-ahhh-ahhh.

Nice find! Where did you get it?

Rich's Foxwillow Pines in Woodstock...

I was trying to think of the name, thanks!

Ken, that was a brilliant piece of detective work. I bet you'd be great at solving the puzzlers on NPR!

I thought "Snake" form immediately. Good sloothing work for certain.

SURPRISE!

So I went back to Rich's Foxwillow Pines today (because I'm obsessed) and as I ventured deeper into their inventory, I came upon another straggly looking conifer. I looked at the tag and it said 'Fort Ann'. I dragged it over to the '4th Hand' specimens to compare and they appear to be 2 different trees. 'Fort Ann' has a "dustier" color with longer needles. And the branches seem to be more curvy. The '4th Hand' seems to have straighter branches and dark needles. Unfortunately the people working had no information to offer--other than price.

I dunno anymore....

Well, didya get it?

Niles, MI(Zone 5a)

No...I couldn't fit anything else in my car. I got a lot of cool stuff though.....

Presque Isle, WI(Zone 3b)

Dybbuk, So, what did you get? "cool stuff" only flames the ardent desire of us who can no longer make it to Foxwillow Pines every weekend. When I was there last most things had to be dug and where frankly out of my price range or of questionable hardiness for my zone. Generally I try to stay in gal size and a little bigger, won't exceed that $35-40 range for something "special" cause, for many reasons, too many "stretches" don't make it. I know you like "weird", so what did you see, how big, how much, and what did you get???? Feed our envy... Ken

Niles, MI(Zone 5a)

Yeah, they are pricey...

Here's what I got:

1Taylor's Sunburst Contorted Pine

1 Variegated Japanese Back Pine

1 Abies Concolor Candicans

1 Ginkgo Ding-a-Ling

1 Ginkgo Variegata

1 Ginkgo Tit

1 Ginkgo Tubiformis

1 Ginkgo Mutant Weeping

1 Gold Rush Metasequoia

1 Abies Koreana Hortsmann's Siberlock

1 Pinus Glauca Kujaki (big gangly variegated plant)

1 Bankruptcy Application

dybukk. LOL at your last purchase!!!! Sure wish I lived closer to Fox Willow, but of course since I am trying to cut down on my new plantings it is probably a good thing I live here.

dybbuk,

I never heard of Pinus glauca - Picea glauca?

Also, correct name for other is: Abies koreana 'Silberlocke' -

Never heard of a "back Pine" either - Back Pain = Bankruptcy?

Dax

Niles, MI(Zone 5a)

Yeah I realized those mistakes. I was wrong with the Abies too as the actual tag on it is 'silber reif'. Not sure what that means. I'm not too savvy with the conifers...yet but I'm learning!

I hear you on that comment. I took two trips there this year. I think, not positive, that I bought a Gold Rush Metasequoia too.

What size did you get? How's it doing?
