Variegated Ginkgo Question

Niles, MI(Zone 5a)

I have a grafted variegated ginkgo which is giving me stress. It's tiny and can't seem to make any headway this season. Started out fine this spring and then lost all the leaves except one. Then it has since sent out a flurry of leaves but they don't mature. They stay very small and pale yellow and then turn brown. The one large leaf has remained but I'm afraid it won't be enough to sustain it's little life. It's only about 3 inches tall and last year it had very strong variegation. I'm wondering if it's too variegated to photosynthesize. Any ideas of what I might do?

My ginkgos never seem to do what I expect. They prosper just when I think they are going down hill and surprise me by throwing a fit at odd times. I don't have a lot of trouble with my variegated variety, but I baby it a lot, and I know that some of the other cultivars are less stable and/or robust.

I hope it's doing better for you.

Thanks for the response. It's still struggling. I have one tree that is doing great and one that has reverted back to green. How old is your's? How big? Much variegation? Yellow or cream stripes? Any pics?

I've had it almost five years now and kept it in a pot. This has dwarfed it a bit. It seems to be pretty stable in its variegation, though. I posted about it last year: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/504847/
I also put an entry for it in the PlantFiles: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/101628/index.html

Here is a pic of one of the leaves from this year.

Here's the pic of my sick child. Now it is down to one large leaf and several small ones that never develop. Sends them out over and over but they can't seem to make any headway. Strange how the one leaf has remained as seems quite strong. I'm baffled.

Almost looks pendulous...
What are the white specks on the leaf and stem?

They were just water spots...

I love this plant! I just hope that I can keep it alive. I've only had it for a couple of months.

Heres one of my three babies, I rooted these off a large street tree that grew a rather large heavily variegated branch.these are in the second year from rooting and are only 6 inches tall so far.they were kept indoors in a cool greenhouse all winter and went dormantNow they are growing again.

Awesome. How did you root them?

In the mist bench at our work greenhouse. took forever, this year the ones I'm rooting I'm using dip N grow root stimulator. Makes em root so much faster as you can regulate the percentage of the Indole butyric acid.amazingly the rose bush growing under this tree is showing variegated branches too! weird HUH? :-)
