Powderpuff - mimosa strigillosa

Bastrop, TX(Zone 8b)

I have been given two of these plants. In PlantFiles, it indicates they can be used as groundcovers, and can cover 10 square feet in a year's time. For those of you growing it, does it overwhelm other plants? If I put it in a bed as a groundcover, will it be difficult to pull out if it gets too close to other plants? I have a lot of space between plants in one of my beds, and would like to use it there. However, if it's difficult to remove, I'll put them somewhere else.

Hi bullnettle--I just love the 'sensitive plant'! I am glad that I am not the only one who has chosen to use it as a ground cover.

I keep mine in a bed by itself. It can very easily overwhelm other plants. If it gets somewhere you don't want it, it can be a problem, but I have found mine extremely easy to contain to a bed with regular mowing and edging tactics applied around it's bed. Occasionally some St. Augustine grass runners manage to creep in and send up a few blades to break the surface of the bed (as you can see in my pic), but this Mimosa can keep my English Ivy at bay!

I'll step outside and get a pic of the entire bed of Mimosa itself and post it in a few.

Ok. Here's my bed of Mimosa. It is just a little corner bed at the corner of our deck. You can see the grass that has made it through and there is a small group of weeds in the bed, but for the most part, it pretty much takes over. It has completely engulfed and covered my solar light, thus giving an indication of its growth habit and that it is time for me to do a little trimming back and cleaning up of the bed. :-))

I think you will enjoy yours; I sure enjoy mine.

Thanks. That answered my question about putting it in a bed with other perennials. I'll put it under a redbud tree in back, that my dog chases squirrels under. I'll put it in the corner, where she can't tramp it, then let it spread. If it outcompetes English ivy, maybe it will outcompete the poison ivy that shows up there in wet years. Thanks again.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. My computer fritzed.

It's pretty vigorous! I had some planted from seed and let me tell you it can easily take over the 10 sq feet in a year.
