I've been given the flowers from my step-Grandmother's funeral to dry. As I'm going through them I started wondering about trying to root a few of them for my step Mom. I want to dry most of them, so am wondering if anyone has rooted any of these flowers from florist arrangements before and just how you've done it?
I really appreciate any and all help, I know that anything I could get rooted would be very special to my step Mom.
The list of flowers I have from the arrangements...
Roses (have tried rooting these before w/ no success), there are many different Roses in these arrangements, including a very unique purple
Daisies (simple white w/ yellow centers)
Long stem Carnations
Another Carnation that looks like a garden carnation since it has buds and smaller blooms, many on one stem
A miniature looking Tiger Lily in 2 different colors
I think the one arrangement has Tulips in it...I'm not sure what they are actually, they are light green w/ purple swirls can send a pic if anyone responds
Glads
Spikes that may be Blazing Stars/Liatris...not sure on that either
Then there's the fillers...Baby's Breath, Statice, Ferns, etc....lots of etc that I don't know what it is for certain.
If anyone thinks that any of these things can be rooted, especially in water (a bubbler w/ an air stone) please let me know asap. I'm wiring all these up to dry them today while they are still very fresh.
Thanks so much,
Heather
Help Rooting Florist Arrangements Please
Heather, I am so sorry about your grandma.
About the garden carnations, look at the stem. If there are like miniature carnation plants growing along the stem, you can take them off the stem and root them. they would root easily.
Anna
Thanks so much Anna. I've gotten through all the flowers except for one arrangement. I've saved one of each type of flower, other than the Roses and I'm going to try to root them. I figure it's worth a shot. I saved a few of the Garden Carnations to try to root, I think they have a better chance than anything.
My step Mom doesn't have time to garden at all, but she loves houseplants and flowers. My Dad was a great gardener and he passed the green thumb on to me (I hope!!). My step Grandma also had some huge & gorgeous houseplants. It just seems so fitting to try to get a plant started in Grandma's memory. =^)
Thanks for your help, I really do appreciate it.
Heather
PS...the one I thought was a purple Rose...and the Tulip I mentioned are one and the same. I've never seen anything like them. It has to be a double Tulip. It's light green and swirled w/ purple. It opens green then turns purple as it ages. If anyone has an idea of what this could be please let me know, I'd love to get some for my step Mom. I'm also going to ask on the Bulb Forum.
I don't know if there were any in your arrangements but I have started curly willow from a florists leftovers. They usually look dead but if you cut the base and there is green cambium they will usually root easily. I have a four year old tree that's 7 feet tall.
Thanks Katlian, I don't think I had any of those, but I will remember that!
I second the curly willow - I started one from my Mom's funeral bouquet and have a nice little tree now. Also if you have any hydrangea, you can pot up a cutting.
You can try rooting the roses in damp vermiculite. I use a clear plastic cup so I can monitor it and put it all in a freezer bag to make a little greenhouse. Rooting gel with fungicide is very handy for roses since they tend to rot. Don't keep the vermiculite too moist for that same reason.
