Hello fellow DGers!
For those of you who require directions to our ranch, please see below. For all of you who think you might like to come but don't have any plants to trade, or feel too new or too whatever, you'll be missing something very fun. No need to have plants to trade as this roundup is about socializing as much as anything else and we've got a several of our honored guests coming great distances to sit, smell a few flowers, eat, drink, and just chat about gardens and gardening in a serene and private setting. If you think you'll be too hot out here, fear not, we've got that under control as well with mist, mist and more mist...lol, lots of shade and cool lawns to park yourselves on.
For those of you bringing plants to trade, there will be plenty of hoses and shade provided for plants just like last year. We will also be constructing trade tables like last year so all will have a spot to set there plants without needing to do much bending as that will be certainly taken care of when you get your trades home and have to plant them...lol.
Your hosts (us) are Pamela and Donald (Pamtannia and drdon here at DG). We welcome all who wish to come and join us for some fun with other people as passionate as you are about gardens and gardening.
Directions to our Ranch:
From the 15fwy in Temecula, which is a little north of San Diego County and south of Lake Elsinore.
Take the Rancho California exit and go east (that is right for those of you coming in from the south and a left for those of you coming in from the north). Follow Rancho California road for approximately 6mi. or until you see Anza Road.
Make a right on Anza road.
Follow Anza road for about a mile or until you get to a dirt road called Los Nogales Road. There will be bright, flourescent green signs at the corner of Los Nogales and Anza stating SoCal DGRU!
Turn left onto Los Nogales Road and follow it all the way to the end. You'll see our horses at the end of the road. Parking will be in the vacant lot across from the ranch. For those of you who feel more comfortable with a phone number, please send me a dmail and I'll give you my mobil number.
Park....our ranch hands will be shuttling guests onto the ranch property and carrying your trade plants, coolers, chairs, or if you're bringing me that new pickup I've been wanting just honk...lol. Our ranch hands will all be wearing shirts that say Sunsprite Ranch Company or Sunsprite Warmbloods, Inc. on them and will be tan in color. Carlos, Honorato, Juan, and Alfonso will be available to help anyone get things to and from their autos all day. For those of you who have difficulty with stairs, Carlos will bring you in through the upper gates and you'll not have to deal with the stairs up to the gardens or the house. Just ask Carlos for "The Upper Gate" and he'll bring you right in.
Facilities: Clean bathrooms are provided by us and one will be handicap friendly. This property is a working horse ranch so there will be trainers working horses all day. If you would like to approach a particular animal please ask Michelle, Amy, Caroline, Pam, or I to escort you to an animal or bring it to you. We ask that no one go into any paddock/corral or stall without an escort that knows the animals and if our cattledoggie Kuki thinks you are doing something dangerous to yourself she'll let you know....lol, she fancies herself as quite the safety enforcer...lol. Our horse trainers are all very skilled with the animals and can tell you all about them, their breed registries, and some basic stuff about their bloodlines. If you are really interested in learning something about any of our horses, find Pam, she loves to talk about her critters and can tell you anything you'd ever want to know (and some things you probably don't...lol), about all of the animals she breeds. We have two yearling colts on the ranch so far this year and one very, very expectant mare who could (although the chance is slim) actually give birth on the day of the roundup. This year we have tents with dining tables and chairs all set up for conversation and eating. Each tent will also have circulating fans with fine, cooling mist to keep guests from overheating. We have three other doggies; Scamp, a Jack Russell Terrier, Dahlia, a PVGB (stands for Petite Basset Grifon Vendeen) who looks a little like Benji and a Bassethound got together for some fun...lol. And Toby, is our big doggie....he is 120lbs of pure love and will try to sneak a kiss whenever he can so please just say "No thank you Toby", and let him know his kissing talents are not required at the moment...lol. Children are very welcome to our ranch, we only ask that they abide by the same rules as adults are asked to observe when it comes to the horses, and their faces are at just the right height for Toby's relentless affections, so please warn them about gallons of doggie saliva...lol.
This is our second year as hosts of this roundup and both Pam and I look forward to many more opportunities to meet so many wonderful fellow gardening enthusiasts. At our home there are several gardens, all of which are open for cruising through. There is the backyard garden, the cactus garden, the rose garden, the fruit and veggie gardens, the greenhouse, and a bunch of stuff spread all over the property for you to see at your liesure. Sun hats are a good idea and sunscreen is a must, wear light colored clothing to avoid overheating and we'll have ice buckets with bottled water placed around so hydration won't be an issue. Please use the recycling and rubbish cans as we will be providing them all over and recycling cans will be clearly marked.
For those of you interested in composting and vermiculture, come see me and I'll take you on a tour of our composting operation. For anyone wishing to go home with some compost, bring a trash bag or two and I'll give you some of our compost or bring a gallon jug and I'll give you some of our alfalfa and compost tea that we also make here to feed our plants.
Once again, if you'd like a telephone number to call just in case, please dmail me and I'll give you my mobil number which I will be carrying until it seems as though everyone has arrived. We'll be ready at 10am to receive guests and there is no time limit as to how long this roundup goes. You will be among friends here who look forward to seeing you again or meeting you in person for the first time.
Wooohooo!!! We're so excited, now I have to get back to work, but here's a pic of Pam and I so that you'll kind of know what we look like.
the very best to all of you,
don
July 8th Roundup Directions
Oh yes, did I forget to mention that guests will get a chance to talk to dave?......yep the dave of DG!
So let's all get the lead out and sign up at the headcount thread and take a look at the trading thread and the food threads. It's going to be huge!
best to all,
don
I'm packing for my trip as I read this. Will be pulling out of Moab tonight in the wee small hours... so as to cross the hot areas in the night. Will hole up in Williams for the day and finish my way across the mohave Thursday night. My little car and I just melt in the heat of the desert sun.
~~waving ~Blooms
Blooms, we wish you much luck and safe passage! This has the possibilities of a journal or log of some kind...what I did on summer vacation. I lived in Arizona at one time with a little black car and no air conditioning. We would only drive home to California at night. I went to Idaho last year on a wild whim and found myself driving across Nevada at night and at three in the morning in Winnemucca thought that perhaps it wasn't a good idea.....be careful!

Hi Don,
Well this sounds like it's going to be a very exciting day....for sure! I can't believe all the things you are doing for us, I for one am very grateful.
I've been trying to contact people to ask them to check into the threads again, as the time is getting shorter. Maybe people are just outside working in their gardens right now. lol
What is this about "talking to Dave"? Is this a surprise guest, or getting to talk to him on the phone....lol
Blooms, I hope you check in here when you arrive, so we know you arrived safely.
Ok everyone, please check into the other threads and lets us all know all the info we need......PLEASE!!
See ya soon my friend,
Donna
You two have to be the most gracious hosts on the planet. I am counting the days.
Plants are mostly lined up and ready to go. Female child is DEFINATELY ready to go. Ratty old van needs gas. Is it the 8th yet!!
See everyone at the RU
Janice
Getting ready to start counting the hours...
:-)
hiya frogsrus,
great to see you!
Pam and I are just really grateful that you and SoCal have allowed us, for the second time, to be the hosts of your roundup. You guys conceived of this thing, and have been completely incredible as far as the leg work goes. Heck, all Pam and I have to do is get this place ready for guests......and the more, the better. I'm so excited maggiemoo is coming and Blooms will be here and Jo....so this year four states are represented. It's a big deal for us and we feel like having the roundup here is good for everyone as we don't have to deal with parks or any public lands. Dave's Garden-ers own our ranch on July 8th, and we're grateful for the opportunity to share it. You guys are awesome!
best,
don
Hokay, I'm HERE... have been lax about reportin' in. Had to take a lay-over day in Williams and did not arrive until just before noon on Saturday.
You guys have waaay too much humidididity and I arrived drenched. It really wasn't that hot just nowhere for the 'glisten' to go. LOL In Moab the air sucks the 'glisten' right off ya.
Started in on getting plants ready to transfer from ground to pots - 'Spin left the trimming to me.... she knows I love take-away gardening.
See you all in a few days. Hurrah!!
~~~~waving from close by in California ~~Blooms
Glad to hear you are here safe and sound. :-) I know Spin is probably saying "Mom, have at it all". lol
Sorry about this little humidity we are having, it is so unusual for us....but at least we're not having the unusual weather that the East Coast is having.
See ya real soon,
Donna
Blooms, I've been watching the humidity in Temecula and noticed they have been having more humidity than Don advertised, lol. I come from a perpetually "glistening" area and was looking forward to what dry heat feels like.
Yippee, two days from now I'll almost be landing!!!!
Glistening?........I'm soaking wet by 6:30am........Deliver me from Orlando....lol.
Glad you made it safely Blooms.....It's going to be a huge treat to meet you in person. Hope we can talk about the desert during the ru.
maggiemoo.........I keep looking up for your plane, but alas, it's the wrong day...lol. Happy 4th everyone!
best,
don
Well, here's wishing you all a happy RU! And hope to see plenty of pictures of smiling faces!
Wish I could have come but too much going on here plus I will be cheering myself up nursery hopping with Kell, Zuzu, and begoniacrazii on Saturday so there's our own mini No. Ca RU!
Now that could a pre planned trip for next year....all 4 of you driving down here for a special treat.
I know that all 4 of you are plant hungry nursery hoppers and down in the San Diego area there are more than enough nurseries for you to browse through. So next year, plan a trip to come to our "fabulous" RU and spend a nice long weekend having fun.
Thanks for thinking of us down here this year, and I promise there will be lots of pictures taken....and lots of fun to be had!!
Have fun yourselves,
Donna
Oh Donna, I hope to do that some day if I can convince my DH that's my idea of a vacation. He would be jealous that I wanted to do that instead of go somewhere with him and he's not a plant person, just puts up with me as he knows it makes me happy. But I do believe Kell and Lali are coming down for the Begonia thing in Santa Barbara in August..sigh...
Woohoo, the four nursery horsewomen of the apocalypse....lol.
I know no stone will be left unturned at any of the nurseries you guys visit and please know that you, the fabulous Zuzu, the magnificent begoniacrazii, and that goddess kell will all be thought of by us as you roustabout up north. I second SoCal's sentiment when I certainly hope that all of you can make it down here next year for this clambake....lol.
hugs to all of you marvelous pals,
don
Anywhere I am called a goddess, I must show up in person! LOL
Oh Dr. Don, you are always the gentleman. Hi Pam!!
I sure wish we all were coming. I know you will have an incredible RU!! What a fabulous place to have it.
Hugs to you all from Northern California!
(((kell)))
Well then you and the other three goddess(es) or would that be goddessii?...lol. Should just throw caution to the wind, put the top down on Lali's beetle and Thelma and Louise it down here....lol.
I miss hunting with you guys, as you find the coolest stuff!
be well and a giant group hug from down south,
don
I will take a ton of pictures and share them here in the CA forum, as I know the others will too, next best thing to being there!
Lol @ Thelma and Lousie in the beetle. What a picture that would be.
Geez............ the trip over the cliff is not a great image. LOL
I just made Lali promise last night to drive like an old lady when we go up the coast to Mendocino on those winding curves around the cliffs. This was not a helpful image. LOL
Rolling on the playhouse floor laughing my hind-end off! You guys are the best!
I promise not to be a lead foot Kell despite my reputation as one! (no kidding when we go somewhere, my son always requests that I drive an not the DH, the little adrenaline junkie - just like his mama!) Just make sure I lay off the sludge I drink that day Kell, and we'll be good (sludge = coffee made by Lali herself! the recipe goes something like this, 8 tablespoons of Turkish ground french roast per cup of boiling hot water! wooo shiver!)
I'll avoid any notable movie ending attempts to plunge off the Mendo coast in the Super Beetle I promise! Kell, who do you wanna be Thelma or Louise? And no one tell, but Brad IS coming along! (Settle down folks, We can l@@k can't we! Besides he just sits in the back seat and looks hot! )
DrDon might be down your way soon. Heading to a Begoniahead thing down in SB and I'm sure will feel the magnetic pull to Kartuz. May have to throw my tent on your lawn before I make the drive home. Bringing 5 gallon bucket to fill with DrDon Goop from the compost!
Hugs to all the Cali Goddessii
Lali
Life Mantra If it's 55º and sunny, THE TOP IS DOWN!
dont ya just love living in Cali!
p.s. sure with I could make it down there for the shin-dig! Here's hoping you all have a FAB time!
He's kinda different looking from my Brad :-) ..but mine has been my best friend for over 30 years and my spouse for almost 30. That's the best.
Now, ladies, if I drive, it is with a lead foot! Right Kell?! I mean, I got places to go, people to beat to the best plant sales! And I got the gas hogging roomy vehicle to pack them in with!
Oh dear, LOL. I will have to have a drink if I am getting in the car with Sue driving around cliff curves. Maybe I will need a few of them. Just going around Berkeley made me much older.
It is so hard being the old lady among all these young gals.
So Dr. Don, maybe we will stop in to see you guys!! I want to see Pam's rose garden and your salvia collection! If we are invited that is!!
Pam and Don,
The time is getting near and I hope you are ready for all of us to invade your lovely ranch. Have you been keeping Maggiemoo busy? I bet she has to wake up with the chickens and help clean out the horse pens before she gets breakfast to work for her keep..lol
Well the plants are all packed in the car, directions are in my purse, got a bag with all the little things I might need and the food is all ready to be assembled in the morning.
Jasperdale will be here by 8:30, then we will drive down to pick up Croclover, jump on the freeway and be on our way. We should be there between 10-10:30.
This is my last post for today, I'm going to bed now....sleep tight everyone. :-))))))
See you all tomorrow!!!!!
Donna
Blooms and Crystalspin where are you?
We are so sorry! Meant to post a quick note to let anyone checking know what had happened, but in the rush to go ahead and get on the road after repairing the big fat FLAT tire, forgot to sit down at the computer and do so.
We did get there, and had a great time (even met Weegy, if just barely! Carlos took her stuff back to the parking lot on the return trip from delivering ours up the hill).
What a wonderful venu for a wonderful party! Add our thanks to everyone else's, Don and Pam!
