Emma had a beautiful JMG show up out of some of her seeds. With no ID to be found, she named it "Nettie Mae". She shared some seed with me to see if it would breed true. These two pictures are of blooms that showed up last week on my plants. As far as I can tell it did breed true as per the pictures Emma sent of last years plants. Thus far this has been the best bloomer for me this year
Nettie Mae JMG
Nice pictures - I'm wondering what the distinguishing features of this plant are as compared to the different rose and chocolate varieties(?)...
Good question----------maybe Emma has some comments on that. She may have some photos of her original plants that would be helpful.
Perry -
Your Blooms are True Beauties!
As best I can tell they look very much like the 'last' version of 'Nettie Mae'.
Ron -
Actually this MG isn't anything like any of the Rose Silks or Chocolates. It is a Very Pale Powdery Pink.
I just planted my 'Nettie Mae' seeds about 2-weeks ago, so it will be a few weeks before I see what mine do.
The story behind the name 'Nettie Mae':
I had a vine come up from nowhere in 2005 - and in a most unusual place. I did not plant it there. Probably dropped a seed - who knows. However, the blooms looked like Nothing I had ever grown before.
The first time this vine started blooming was when my 93-year old mother died. Her name 'Nettie Mae'. So, I thought it fitting to name this MG after her.
The vine bloomed the same throughout the year.
A Very Pale Powdery Pink with a slightly darker promient *Star* pattern with white Streaks throughout the bloom. Also had a very thin Picotee Edge and Variegated Leaves.
Here is a photo of the original 2005 'Nettie Mae'

Took me a while, but I finally found the MG Thread where I posted the Blooms that I grew out in the same year 2005 from 'Nettie Mae' 2005 Seeds.

Here is the description as I posted on this Thread on 11-07-05
"This is one AWESOME MG ! ! !
A new variant for me that just started blooming a couple of days ago.
Had 8 blooms the first day it bloomed.
It is from 2005 Seeds of 'another new variant' from this year,
however, it did NOT grow back 'True', but I am not disappointed.
The seeds are from a MG that I named after my mom 'Nettie Mae'.
I'll post the 'Original Nettie Mae' also for comparison.
Only planted 2 seeds so am curious to see what the other vine does, and what these seeds produce next year.
Also, very curious to see what the other seeds from the 'Original Nettie Mae' will do next year.
I am fascinated with these blooms. Unlike no other MG that I have grown.
The petals seem to be thicker to the touch than other MGs that I have noticed---
almost 'Velvet-Like' for lack of a better description.
The Softest Solid Pale Pink with a White Throat.
Leaves are Variegated.
The Star on these blooms seem to be almost White -
I will need to pay attention to what the other blooms do to see if I was seeing things.
Ron, what is your opinion of this bloom????? "

More Information that I posted on this Thread
"The blooms have been lasting all day, however, I contribute that to the cooler weather and am sure they would not if blooming in warmer/hot weather. The first blooms that I saw was when I returned from Houston/Galveston and all were still open at 5pm. I'll post a couple of photos of those blooms, but only to show the anthers better.
I find it interesting that the tips of the anthers appear to be more 'Yellow' and these photos will reflect that better - which is another reason that I am so curious about this particular MG"

Unfortunantly, I didn't get any seeds from the second vines that I grew that Bloomed in December '05. And what a pity. I was really wanting to know what they would do for the third time.
Perry -
Do your petals feel like I've described here?
Also, the blooms that I got had zero sheen to them.
They were a very soft velvety 'thick-type bloom.
This MG will be interesting to follow and see what it really does.
Thanks for posting your lovely photos.
Emma
Hi Emma - My strong impression is that the flower you are calling Nettie Mae came out of either one of the Chocolates or one of the Rose types...either as a dilution or possibly with the addition of a pale pink pigmentation picked up from another Ipomoea nil...
Here are some links to pictures in the PlantFiles that show a sort of progression of features including some diluted areas and white streaks in the blooms...
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/55095/
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/9854/
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/40312/

http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1687646
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/58652/
some of the above show more of a resemblance to the first bloom you started with while other linked to here are displaying the diluted areas and streaks that could become more prominent...
Emma,your original shown here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1620846
is showing an admixture of features that bear a strong resemblance to some of the ones I linked to above...
if the pigmentation dilutions become more pronounced, then what would be left would be something like the pink chiffon that you got...and if the bloom shown here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1863807
is actually descended from your original one here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1620846
It sure looks to me that in some way, your blooms are diluted descendants of the lighter colored Roses and/or Chocolates...
although the blooms that Txwillie has posted here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=2432937
looks darker than your very light ones Emma...,to my eye,it appears to be definitely lighter than, but somewhat closer to this one
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/40312/
it may be that the dilution may not be fully stable as of yet...and may need to be grown out some more to achieve dilution stability...
TTY,...

Thanks Ron,
All of that makes sense to me.
Also, Perry's blooms seem to have a larger white area/halo at the throat - and, I like those 'Fluffy Blooms' that he got.
Love that name, Ron....'Pink Chiffon'.
Now I'm very curious how my blooms turn out and what Perry's continue to do.
I'll need to post my blooms to this thread so we can see what they are going to do.
Thanks again Ron,
Emma
PS: This is one incredible MG

Emma, in checking the "feel of the petals" it is hard to say whether they are thicker. Never have really thought about thickness of petal and really don't have too many other MG's blooming that I can compare with. The Nettie Mae blooms do hold longer into the day, but I have noticed some splitting of petals with wind exposure.
Sure is good to hear comments from you and Ron on the intricate color patterns of this and other varieties.
Ron it has been very hot and windy here this Spring. Have noticed that the MG's have just held at about 5 or 6 inches and would not vine out. Even had a couple of JMG's put out a bloom or two when they were no more than 6" tall. It's still hot, but wind is not as bad and finally the JMG's are starting to develop some vines. What are your thoughts on the reaction of MG's to conditions such as those described?
Thanks,
Perry
Perry,
I don't see where it would hurt them to give them a feeding of Fish Emulsion. Certainly wouldn't hurt!
Ron will probably have some better recommendations.
Emma
Hey Perry - Okay, from what I can gather you say that it is still hot,but less windy...despite notions to the contrary by other growers, the vines need water(!) to grow ala tissue expansion...hot winds will cause more water loss ,so ,it would make sense that due to less water evaporation, that there would be more water available to the plant for tissue enlargement and to lengthen into vines...
TTY,...
Ron
Emma & Ron thanks for the info re: possible causes for slow growth. I thought maybe the seedlings sensed things were not right and had some mechanism in their growth clock that slowed growth 'til times got better. Have even noticed the same thing in other plants such as Cosmos which came up and bloomed on 6" plants and some wildflowers that put out tiny blooms on plants not 2" tall. Tough little critters that are gonna do their thing regardless of what Ma Nature throws at 'em!!!
