Lilly I.D. without flower pix!

Oak Hill, OH(Zone 6a)

My neighbor (and gardening mentor) gave me seeds from her Lily and I have no idea what kind it is. I saw the flowers when it was in bloom. They were large orange outward facing trumpets - I think 4 to a stem. The stems are 1 to a plant and are hollow like dandelion stems. I took pix of the the seed pods with what little seeds were left on them and the base of the plant.

I'm a newbie plus have only had a house here in the south for a couple of years.

Here's a different shot - a little blurry but helpful.

Here's the base of the plant.

I guess I also need to know what to do with the seeds now that I have them. ;-)

Do they have to been chilled? Started indoors in a pot? Directly outside? Will they bloom next year or the year after? Can I save them and if so for how long?

Also know that you can't I.D. without a flower pix but thought I could get genus and species if not cultivar. (see! I'm learning some things!)

If your neighbor called it a lily and it is actually an amaryllis, it is probably St Joseph's Lily. They've been a pass along plant in the south for decades. Try looking for that one and see if that's it. Otherwise, it's really difficult, if not impossible to ID with what you have. In any case, I don't think you'd need to chill them and I think you should leave them right where they are. I'm betting they will return and probably sooner than you think. What else does yoour neighbor have to say about this plant? I'm assuming it is also growing in his/her garden.

It appears that it is an amaryllis - looked a lot like the Orange Sovereign.

My neighbor is in her 90's and uses a lot of common names that don't match what I've searched for. Like she calls Mexican Petunia Mexican Pansy. Sure knows how to grow things though! Her flowers have suffered some this last year - knee troubles. Believe it or not, she just had a knee replacement last month!

I've tried to help as much as I can with watering etc shnce she's at her daughter's to recover.

If these are the only ones around, would the seeds be ok or shoud I just throw them away?
