Concern with root system of trees around pool?

Raleigh, NC

I have just added a pool to my back yard...yeah!!!...and am know adding the landscaping. Does anyone have any suggestions for evergreens (to create privacy) whos' root system won't jepordize the pool? I need about 3 trees for a section that is only 5 feet from the pool. Thanks in advance for your help!

If you want to have total assurance, before you do any planting install a root barrier a few inches from the pool wall. It should extend down about three feet or to the bottom on the pool, whichever is greater, since the (probably porous) backfill around the pool might permit root penetration to greater than normal depths.

Your concerns might better be focused upon litter falling or blowing into the pool and clogging your filters -- ?

How big is the space you are trying to fill? How high does the visual barrier need to be? Are you limited to trees? Ornamental grasses surround our pool. Finally, why evergreen? Are you going to be using the pool (area) in the winter?

I have to wonder how practical a root barrier is now that the pool is installed. Three feet down a few inches from the pool wall? I would think that would create more risk to the pool than the trees.

I do agree with Guy that leaf litter and debris will be a bigger concern. Also, choose plants that are not thorny or prickly and don't use anything attractive to bees.
