I think we may have borers and/or ants in our maple. Is there anything we can do to save it?

I just went through your link, and I agree with all the advice you've already been given there. Your tree is showing serious stress, the borers are voracious and doing heavy damage, and I probably would not want such a damaged tree that close to my house even if you can save it.

But before you give it up, ask a local certified arborist to inspect it in person and see if there's any hope. We can only tell you so much from 1000 miles away here on the forums.
