I know I can also post in the id forum but i thought i would start with all you fellow canucks. Now i know i planted this thing about 3 years ago. Whatever it is was kinda dormant for a year, then last year just sort of looked like a broad leaf yucca or something but i don't recall having planted a yucca. This year it started sending up this spike about mid may and it grew and grew and grew (taller than me) and finally today one of the flowers opened.
any ideas on this one
Looks awfully like a foxtail lily to me. You lucky thing. Do you remember planting that?
Ginny
Foxtail Lily.
Mine flowered the past three years and nothing this year. Very disappointing!
Ditto - got three years of bloom, this year - nada!
bingo! i didn't remember the name at all until i did some checking for the latin name and a site mentioned the bulb looked like a starfish. I remember having all kinds of trouble figuring which way was up. Had the plant growing upside down for a time, thought i had killed it but threw it in the garden anyway supposedly zone 5 don't know how it made it but i'm glad thanks
I've two in the garden, new this year. As an experiment. We shall see if they survive under a bag of leaves for the winter. Yours is very pretty.
At Butchart Gardens they grow amongst the delphiniums . Very striking as they bloom at the same time out there..
Inanda where have you planted them? Mine are right up against the house foundation with a stone patio about 2 feet away, south,
The blooms were almost 4 feet high last year! This year the shoots came up really early and I thought I would have a great show. So disappointing.
One new thing at that spot - the outlet for my new high effec. furnae is just above. There is a lot of condensation there and it drips down on 'warm' days and forms a pile of ice over the lily spot. I thought that would be good - protection and then lots of mositure early in spring but maybe not. Any thoughts anybody?
This is what they looked like on March 26.
Who knows. (Re your furnace vent). Maybe they are taking a break this year. Have you been feeding them properly?
Mine are against the west wall of house. Afternoon sun but maybe too dry for them. I have to keep remembering to water them.
Mine are yellow & orange (supposedly).
My martie seedlings love it there though.
They prefer to be on the dry side, not the wet side so not too sure about all the ice you give yours. Maybe go to the blub forum to see what others think.
inanda
Truth is Inanda I have not been feeding the poor things at all! Probably starving I suppose!
Poor things.
jagonjune,yes that is a beauty !
that is one that I would be interested in
did you ,buy the "star" root in Edmonton ?
If I am understanding properly it is possible that they will survive in zone 3a/b..
How tall is yours
they say that eremurus (foxtail lily )can be 8-10feet tall!
I purchased the bulb from botanus about 4 years ago when i was prepared to try almost anything here
It is taller than me (5'1")
It is in a bed that gets full sun but not much protection over the winter (except for the leaf mulch i put on)
