What about a cactus? There are some absolutely stunning species available that would liven up any patio.

You could try growing Oleander in a container and train it to be a tree. Sometimes they can be bought that way. They stand up to heat very well.

How about Chilopsis linearis (desert willow) or Palo Verde?

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

There are some native shrubs and small trees in the western American deserts that can be absolutely gorgeous if given just the slightest hint of care. Before looking too far afield, try checking them out. The Chilopsis suggestion is one of them, and it's a tree I would snap up in a heartbeat if it was hardy here!

The thing you're going to have to be careful of is the heat...all these plants mentioned above should do great planted in the ground in your area, but in a pot you'll need to water them more often than would be needed in the ground (but not too often, they don't like to stay wet), and also make sure the pot itself doesn't get so hot that it cooks the roots. Since the patio faces east it might not be as much of a problem as if it faced west but definitely a watchout.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

I'd avoid Oleander - dangerously poisonous

How about citrus? I live in so cal and grow citrus in giant pots. Would it survive the heat? Check with local nursery. Not only do you get fruit, but they are evergreen and the blossoms are heavenly scented. I have attached a pic of my "citrus orchard" on my front patio.

Nice.

Could you plant a weeping willow in a very large pot?
