Gorgeous Dragonfly on my Glories!!!

Lake Forest, CA(Zone 10a)

Lookie at what I found this morning! I was up pretty early, and checking the new leaf miner damage on my poor glories, and all of a sudden I was face to face with one of the biggest dragonflies I'd ever seen! His eyes were so amazing and his green body so vibrant I almost thought a fly fishing lure had somehow landed there by accident! Sorry the photo doesn't do him justice- we're in the middle of "June Gloom" here on Orange County so it was overcast...

Beautiful picture!!!

Hey thanks you guys! I must confess, I took about ten shots of him and picked the best! It was done with a Kodak easyshareCX7530, which was fairly inexpensive when we bought it a year ago. Takes great closeups!

Really nice picture, love the green of the thorax/abdomen of the dragonfly!

Yes! He was truly magnificent. His eyes were huge. He chilled on that leaf for at least an hour or two.

I like your guy on the red fence post too. I love watching them dip and skim over the water, and how their lacy wings catch the sunlight!

I saw a pretty blue one yesterday but he wasn`t chilling. He was staying as far away from my camera as he could get. Oh well. :)

This butterfly came into the yard today and I couldn't resist trying to get a picture (even tho I don't have a highly sofisticated camera). Just put it on 2X zoom and caught the pretty thing still.

Anyone know what this one is classified as? First time I remember seeing one like this.

Hi Perry,
That is an little beauty.

Don't have a clue about butterflies, but Cat would.
I'll have to D-Mail her to have a look.

Yes, That's a beautiful butterfly! I havem't seen very mant of them around here this year, although God knows I've been more than generous with the caterpillars! I've let hen munch quite a few leaves in my garfen!

TXwillie that is a beauty of a butterfly! I don't know the native species in Texas, a google picture experience my reveal its identity though.

This butterfly picture was also posted in the Texas Gardening forum and maggiemoo from Conroe, TX, suggested the name Buckeye butterfly. A goole-search showed that to be the correct name.

Hey Perry - Nice pattern on that critter...looks like the people here at this forum

are very knowledgeable and would also be helpful about this subject matter...

TxWillie,

Yes, a buckeye it is...however, this is the first time I've seen such yellow markings on it...the ones I see way down in the south tip of Texas have orange. Here's a photo of one from last year. A Common Buckeye...if my mind serves me correctly.

...and another...can't remember if this is a Tropical or Mangrove...am leaning towards Tropical as the Mangroves are rare.

Thanks to everyone for help in identification. Cat the pictures you show have markings similar to markings shown on a couple of sites I checked out. All I can figure on the yellow markings is perhaps with the majority of the wild flowers in West Texas being yellow, maybe the butterfly evolved into markings that fit the flowers?
