I have had the hoya in the picture below for a "few" years and it has "thrived" a little to much in a hanging 8" pot under my eaves in bright, very warm shade in So. Cal. I have yet to have flowers. It was growing up its hanging chain and into the rafters so in the interests of saving the house (!) I had to bring it down, remove the chain and repot it with a teepee make out of bamboo stakes in the large clay pot. I have since moved it to a morning sun position behind my gate to see if I can get it to bloom and have some questions.
Can this be pruned? Will I sacrifice blooms if I do? I have seen discussions on whether it blooms on new or old wood, etc and have reached no conclusion.
What is a peduncle? I will post another photo of a tiny stalk that may be a very young bloom stalk. Is this a peduncle? When will it bloom? Next spring? This year?
When does a hoya grown outside normally bloom? Do they have lot of blooms or just a few?
I read somewhere that you should not remove the old bloom stalks as they will bloom again next year. Any truth there?
Anything else I should know?
Thanks!
What should I feed it to get it to bloom?
New Poster -very ignorant - sorry!
There are some wonderful links in the sticky thread at the top of the Threads/Posts. Your questions require a lot of words LOL and you may find the answers up there faster..... But here we are incase you have more quetions......!!!

Yes, thank you, I did start with those and they were very informative. However, I have 2 issues that complicate my understanding: 1) I don't know the cultivar and each seems to require different care and 2) I'm growing outside and most posts seem to refer to indoor growing.
I'm hoping some brave soul will gently educate me. Thanks!
Could you provide us with a clear close-up picture of the leaves, that may help us narrow down which species of Hoya you may have.

Yes it can be pruned, peduncles usually show up on new growth but most likely a new branch will grow near the cut area.

Hoyas can be "moody" bloomers. Try to fertilize with some Bloom Boost fertilizer and mist oten with water that has some seaweed extract mixed in.
Most of the time they start with a few blooms and amount will increase over time.

True for many Hoya species, they'll keep blooming from the same stem (can be many times in the year), some species may loose the peduncle after blooming, some keep it for several blooms then "throw" it.

If you go to some of the links about hoya cultivation, you will see how it is not HOW you grow them or WHERE you grow them but where and how the hoya likes to grow. It involves temperature, humidity, airmovement/circulation. If you can do this outside...GREAT. If you can do it inside GREAT. No rules....I think there is another thread on this page talking about that as well.....
Yes...a closer photo of the plant/leaves MIGHT give us a better idea of what you are dealing with...i.e. ID.

It looks to me like one of several possibilities of H. australis. If so, it is more of a fall bloomer than spring or summer. Altho I do have one that is blooming now, but I think it's a fluke.
I also got more blooms when I fertilized with a bloom-booster fertilizer (one with a very high number in the middle. I think this year I used Peter's 5-50-17). It sounds like your outside conditions are ideal with a little morning sun. In fact if it IS H. australis, it will probably get very bronze colored leaves with the increased sun now.
Just fertilize once a month for a couple of times and I'll bet you will get blooms this fall.

OK great info, just what I'm looking for YaaaaaaY! Some more pics of leaves. They are 3-4 inches wide by 1.5-2 inches long, medium green, thick like a succulent. I would love to know which one it is. I will ply it with some type of high phosphorus bloom formula and post any flowering. Thanks! Keep it comin!
Good possibility it could maybe be H. australis...but so hard to tell from leaves.
Just curious...is that first shot (of the leaf alone) a 'typical' leaf of your plant?
It looks like some of your plant's leaves have more 'pointed tips' than the one shown....as though your plant has some variable growth.
No, it must be the angle of the camera. All leaves are pretty much the same with a slightly rounded tip.
No, I'm definitely an experienced gardener. I just have not grown hoya. Good thing its growing outside huh? If it was inside, I would have to have a 3 story house to accomodate it!
