The 7' deer-proof fencing we installed simply isn't working. I think a tall, fast growing hedge is in order. Has anyone used tsuga canadensis (Canadian hemlock) as a hedge in my area? I'm in Oakhurst, Sunset zone 7, USDA zone 9a. We have about 330' to consider and I love the graceful look, but ouch! The cost of hemlock is pretty high. Also, I hate to shell out the money and then have them suffer through the hot dry summer. Is Western hemlock a better idea? I am open to all suggestions. My concerns are flammability, mosquitos, and growth habit. I need something fast, but not too wide. The area is mostly full sun and the soil is good. Thank you.

Hedges for Deer control in low Sierras
Are they only coming in to eat your treasures or are you situated on a nightly path to water or bed? just curious. somewhere there's a list of hedge plants that deer won't eat. lemme see if I can remember the thread.
