Who am I ???

Northern Michigan, MI(Zone 5a)

The other evening I ended up "running thru" a Wal-Mart to pick up some things. Of course it's a must to jog thru the plant/gardening section. Since my daughter and sister were both with me I didn't have much time to browse and they were both making fun of me as I walked along looking at the plants.

I gasped with excitement snatching this plant exclaiming OMG it's an escargot.......... they thought I had been seized by something. I guess my gasp was pretty loud. My sister asked me if I had wet myself in my excitement. Now I don't have any begonias and I've never grown one so I don't know one from another. I had admired the pics of the escargot on this forum so had been keeping my eyes open for one when I went to garden centers etc. Because I am in a rural area my actual shopping for plants in person is usually limited to if I'm out of town or online. There were several of these (3 I think) and I took what I thought was the healthiest looking. They had been crammed onto a shelf of plants and the leaves looked a little abused.

Looking at the plant and trying to verify it's identity online has made me wonder is this an escargot or just another curled leaf (snail look) variety......??? The largest leaf has a couple cracks in it...more than likely from being shoved around on the shelf at the store. I'm thinking the mature leaves look to pale/silverish white and smooth to be an escargot.

Thankyou for any and all opinions....

Oh, how beautiful. You really found something nice.

I don't think it's Escargot, but it's pretty!

Escargot seems to have a lot more brown in it, and yours seems to have more silver in it.....it's pretty close, though, and just as beautiful!!

I think there are a lot of people out there selling begonias as Escargot that *aren't*!

Well it wasn't labelled at all. I had in my excitement assumed it was an escargot. As I said I have never had a begonia of any kind before. It's actually perking up and growing a tad bit since I took it out of the little pot it came in.

I have it in the house at the moment. We had a bad spell of rain and I was worried it would get "too" water logged and I think that's a bad thing with begonia's....not sure, but I think I read that somewhere...lol.

I was at first disappointed to think it wasn't what I thought it was but everytime I look at it I think I like it more and more. It has fuzzy red stems and is very attractive with the silver hue.

It would be better if it weren't Escargot.....rarer!! You can always get an Escargot!! Start a few from leaves and I bet you get a trade going for Escargot. Like from me. LOL

I may get brave enough to snip a leave off and try to coax it into growing....lol.

Sounds good! And fertilize it to get it going. LOL

Calif_Sue I'm almost 100% sure that the pics shows an Escargot Begonia.
