MsC's Moving African Violet Collection...

Lilburn, GA

Have you talked to your doctor abou it?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Not sleeping is very bad for you and can cause death. Your Doctor needs to do something to get you in a regular sleeping pattern.

Denver, CO

I had clinical insomnia for a summer a few years back- As novel as it was, I strongly suggest not tolerating it. Life is 102.67% better, my dear. ( I try to ensure that I get a proper 9 hours thesedays, no matter when I go to bed. It is extremely important, even if it seems you can do it.)
Kenton

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm sure Jesse isn't ignoring the insomnia, but it can be hard to get dosages tweaked so meds are just in the right balance... and yes, if you haven't told your doctor about this latest episode, you should. (We only nag you because we love you.)

:-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I guess we've gotten a little O/T with being concerned about Jesse...

MsC, do you have a thread somewhere about moving the Zoo Crew or updated pics of them in their new digs?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I am going to see my doctor tomorrow since this has been a really bad day and I have done some things that I have not done in quite a while. My life sucks right now and I need something else to help. I'm on a lot of meds right now but something is not working right. So I got an appointment to see my doctor tomorrow.

Kenton,
Here's a pic of the group i could put names to.

Jesse, Hang in there.I sleep very lil myself, but by choice. Keep us posted on how the Dr.visit goes.

Hi,CritterO ~ I haven't posted pics of the new set up yet, or of the ZooCrew. Things here are still in a bit of flux. I added another full stand & gained some really nice windows, 2 are garden type windows & my episcias seem to love them.

I'll post some pics as I get things a lil more organized...lol

Glad to be back!

Hiya Allison,
Yes mine has bloomed & bloomed for me. I love it.
I have some babies down & was hoping to get a sport. I think sports are so neat. Mine has a little better form now, it had started stretching for light because of the move.

Have any of the sports been registered ???

MsC

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

YES ! Lot's of the Sports have been registered .
AVSA ask people to PLEASE if they have a SPORT to check the list and make sure it has not been registered already.
They also ask to PLEASE when registering SPORTS to give the plants name that it SPORTED from.
This is so important !
AVSA has a list of registered Sports and what plant they Sported from.
ALL Chimeras are Sports ~
Lot's of Ma's came from Sports
Lot's of Rob's plants Sport
I find this list very helpful and Sports very interesting ~
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/565175/
The AVSA list of registed Sports is under construction. Never seen this before so maybe there will be a lot new wonderful sports registered !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

PS Amy WON my last Funambule plant ! I grew several and gave them away.
Lorry gave me a Funambule Sport ! When it blooms next time I am going to figure out if it is one of the registered Sported Chimera Funambule's !

Denver, CO

It gets harder and harder to stay away from AVs until fall! I have enough to do outside...
Funambule is one that was on an old lust-list of mine. I usually figure it is OK to give in when I stumble over it again!

How long have you been in your new home, MrsC? As in- are the AVs beginning to get used to their new spot and blooming well again?
K

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Kenton,
I'm pretty sure I have Funambule babies in there somewhere & will gladly share one with you. Just send me an email with your addy & have a lil bit of patience with my shipping. It's kinda hard to tell what's coming & going here. I'd hate to ship you Chritmas decorations or something sillly like that..:)

We've been in the new place about a month . I still have boxes stacked everywhere but I couldn't stand to wait any longer to rejoin the fun on the forum.
The Av's seem to be doing great so far.Lot's are blooming or setting buds. The AV's & I have been experiencing the "joys" of powdery mildew lately but that's not too bad.
I had to make lots of changes in the new house & I have AV's everywhere! I added another large stand & could really use another.
Shhh....we won't talk about the teeny widdle Av addiction I have.

MsC

Silver Spring, MD

There goes the A word again. It's not an addictions it's ....... darn ..... you're right; it is an addiction.

Denver, CO

I've got a completely milder word:
Obsession.

Or is it posession?

Whatever it is, there is a bunch of folks in a particular forum that have it...

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

obsession is much nicer sounding- it sounds more like a love affair and less like we are willing to sell our 1st born children for the next AV!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

:)) :) :)) :)

Denver, CO

Geez April! I didn't want anyone to know why I don't have kids!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

ROTFLOL!! Kenton, I've missed your wit around here... glad you've been posting again!

Denver, CO

Jill, I was just looking at my plants from you...
No, I'll not go into it, here, I'll D-mail you.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

MsC the AVSA web sight is back up running !
Here is the registered Av Sport page. I find it very interesting. It's only back sense 1980 and they hope everyone will register their Sports like this . And if someone has a Sport to look here before growing it out and re-naming it.
The new Sport also has to be an improvment of Mom to be registered. I find it fun and interesing !

Thanks Allison!
I've been looking through all the sports of Rob's.
My Rob's Willawong has sprouted a variegated patch. It's really pretty!
I was trying to figure out if it was reverting ???

MsC

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Any AV that Changes from all green to variegated is OK in my book !
like how Rob's Fuddy Duddy (7886) 06/02/1993 (R. Robinson) Semidouble dark mauve-purple sticktite pansy. Dark green, quilted. Semiminiature
SPORTED TO >>
Rob's Lucky Charm (9293) 11/21/2003 (R. Robinson) Semidouble orchid-mauve pansy. Variegated dark green and gold, plain; sucker propagation. Miniature

PRETTY COOL ! Chimera Foliage plants ~

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Yep, I agree sprouting variegation is Very good! Reverting back to green is BADDDDD..lol

I 'm afraid I will have lots of nice variegated plants that revert to all green plants becaue of the heat???

MsC

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes a lot of mine are also. What 's nice is when I grow a baby it's variegated again .Then it gets hot it loses the variegation.
Also a fertilizer with high number of nitrozen first number can turn foliage all green.
I have a few plants I can't get to bloom. I am going to try Dyna-Gro bloom food low in nitrogen and try it also on my variegated plants.

Mandeville, LA(Zone 9a)

Hello all. I am new in this forum and my only gessies are Nematanthus. I dropped in though because I am moving out of state this fall. I have many plants but the majority of them are large Nematanthus and Anthuriums. Will also be moving two macaws, two large dogs and two cats. Soooo, this thread was an inspiration! I, however, am moving alone so I plan to rent a small u-haul trailer to carry the plants (no one to tell me no) and moving truck will carry the rest. Thanks for the bubble wrap and plastic tub idea. The weather should be fine for me so I won't need the tops. It won't matter that some "people" are too tall. Hope you are well in your new home MsC.

P.S. My grandmother fueled my plant addiction when I was just a child with her African Violets. They are wonderful plants. I've seen some real beauties in the AV forum.

Denver, CO

Welcome to our enablement. No doubt you will be growing AVs after your move if you return at all to this forum.
Look at that, MrC, we knew your information would help someone out.

Good luck and safe blessings on your move.
Kenton

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Hiya Neanthusnut!
I don't envy you at all..lol
Here's one thing about moving the larger outside plants I didn't include..

I put all of my out door plants in large clear plastic garbage bags and tied them at the top.I wanted to make a green house effect because I knew I wouldn't have lots of time to tend to them even after we unloaded. Good thing I did too, I got sick and those babies didn't get watered until I arrived a week later. Just be sure you set them in shade or unwrap the tops for ventilation. Sure made it easy! No dirt in the moving vehicle either. I boomed them all for bugs as I pacakged each one, too.

Oh, I moved my Scarlet Macaw too! He had so much fun looking at everything it was too funny. The African Grey just shouted at everybody that past us " Hey!! Whatcha doin?" They enjoyed the trip way more than I did.

Good Luck,
MsC

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Nemanthusnut! You sound like you will fit right in! I don't envy you moving either- it's hard work. Are you moving far? Perhaps to a place where you can grow new and more exciting things?
Good luck and feel free to contribute!!

Mandeville, LA(Zone 9a)

I've got two likely targets...Charleston, SC and Jacksonville, FL. Charleston is about 750 miles from here. Jacksonville is closer. I moved here 5 years ago from Memphis, TN but I didn't have all of these anthuriums (about 25) when I moved here. My Nematanthus were smaller. They have grown quite big because they live outside year 'round. I moved a 14 year old selloum that was a houseplant in TN and now it is about 7 feet tall and 7 feet wide. So, a U-Haul will definitely be in order! Thanks for the info about the bags. That's a good idea. I'm dreading the actual move but I'll be so happy to get away from this area.

MsC, if you're missing the Gulf South humidity, I'll be glad to send you some!

NN

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Humidity??? Nope... I think my Tropical plants would love some though.

We could use a lil rain...that would be nice.

We had a 25 ft moving truck for the ZooCrew, cages & plants. It looked like Barnum & Bailey's Circus. We did draw a crowd, too.

We had lots of hotels that would not accept us because of our birds so be careful & good luck.

MsC

Denver, CO

What were they afraid of "Bird Flu?"
(Please excuse my poor-taste joke...)
They ought to have not admitted recent Vietnamese tourists if that is what they don't want...

But seriously; I never thought about birds and all in hotels. (Just dogs/cats) How often were they accepted, and what was different about a bird-friendly hotel?
K

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Kenton,
Joke ?? No problem:)
Yes ! Many of them were afraid of the silly bird flu.
If we told them when they ask us about pets & we were honest , at least every other one would not let us stay. The 6 dogs & cat were not a problem. Oh & we paid big time for the privilege of our babies sleeping in with us. Our birds have never even been out of the house much less over seas..lol
I don't even own a chicken!

Without this getting too "politcal"... there just needs to be a little more public awareness that's realistic & not media hype.

We faired ok though thanks to some really nice folks at several places.
The night I got so sick, I'm still saying prayers for blessings for the man that let us stay & did not even charge us the standard pet deposit for any of them. Whereever he is "Bless him again"

MsC
