SUN STROKE

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I was out this morning putting that stinky fish formula on my brugs and datura and it is already hot here in Ga. and that was before 9:00. I thought I would post this to remind everyone do your gardening during the hours when the heat isn't so bad. Drink plenty of liguids before and during the gardening and don't forget to wear protection from the sun and the bugs as well. Take frequent breaks amd if you feel dizzy stop at once and get out of the heat and seek help. I would hate to lose a new friend. Jim

Jim, thanks for posting this sound advice. I do my gardening during the evening hours and applying insect repellant is a must. What makes me curious is why mosquitoes zero in on me and leave my fiance alone, but he is a tick magnet and they don't bother me. Any ideas?

That's great advice. One can get overheated before they know whats happening. It's rainy and cool here today, just sprinkles, perfect for working in the garden.

Carol, It's probably because you are so much sweeter than he is. Just a thought. There is some kind of disease going around in Georgia. They found birds that have died from it and it is transmitted by mosquitoes. It has been on the new's 3-4 days now. Jim

Hope it is not the Nile virus you are dealing w/down there Jim...it could be deadly to humans as well.
As for your words of warning about the sunstroke, take heed folks! I was a victim once, no fun at all. I assumed if you kept plenty of water in you all would be well...HAH! When it hits you you'll never cool down. To this day I still seem to be easily affected by the heat. (On the good side tho, after the incident my wife let me put an AC unit in my shop! Ahhhhhh....so nice....!) Ya'll be careful.

That is the virus here in Georgia. Must be around everywhere. Jim

It hasn't made it everywhere yet but it is spreading rapidly so we will all have it eventually.

WNV was found by both the CDC and the NYS Dept of Health less than a half mile from my house. This virus is for real, and it does kill.

Mosquito prevention is adament in preventing it's spread. Check your property for stagnant water, look everywhere and dump that water out. If you have a neighbor that hasn't taken care of their inground pool it is a massive body of stagnant water....call your local health dept asap and they'll make them take care of it. Likewise, if any of the businesses in town have visible or suspected stagnant water then you must call your township immediately. This is not the time for being "kissy-kissy" with your neighbors and deciding out of niceness not to call the town because it would cause trouble for them. They're part of an extremely serious public health hazard and the safety of the your family and community are at risk by these individuals.

Unfortunately, last summer I had to call about the pool next door as the woman hadn't maintained it in three years...there were even mallards using it. It was a green bubbling sump. The town inspector came out IMMEDIATELY (within ten minutes of my call!!!) and made her clorox it, she also got a mega fine for having a public health hazard.

So be awares as one of YOUR neighbors may call about YOUR property if you don't get rid of your stagnant water asap.
