Super slow growth

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

My MG (I have several different kinds) are growing so slow that most only have 1 set of true leaves or just their "baby" leaves! Same thing with the moon flower. They are in a container with Miracle Grow potting soil. Is that the culprit? All the volunteers from last year in my garden bed seem to be faring better, although those are still pretty small as well. It has been on the cold side of normal here in NE Ohio---could that be affecting their growth? Tamara

The cold is most likely the problem. When I start plants from seed in the winter in my greenhouse, I set the pots/trays on 2 ltr. soda bottles painted black and filled with water. I keep them there once they pop up until the night time temps are in the mid 60's. It makes all the difference in the world. What the bottles do is collect heat in the day time and releases it at night .. aka passive solar heating.

Glad it's not just me!!! Mine have been so slow the bugs just stroll along and eat them up - no need to rush into it!!!

What a great idea about the soda bottles! I'm not sure it would be quite as effective here in th NE, but at least it would give me a bit of a jump-start! I will start stocking up. (Can you believe I am already worrying about NEXT winter??? Sheesh!)

It's finally warming up here and we are expecting a hot and muggy weekend. Hope the same is true for you in OH!

It is!! It was really warm and humid yesterday and it's supposed to be that way today too. Hopefully it will be the kick in the pants my MG (and veggies!) need. ;-) Tamara

I can hardly wait to share photos!

Ever the optimist me!

Mine also hung out doing nothing until the hot weather hit last week. In 3 days they all are working on 3 or 4 leaves - when for 3 weeks they all sat with just one. It's in the 90's now. Hope that will spur them on to start running :-)

Here's my best one - growing in my tree trunk. He's just started taking off in the past week.
