Salix integra 'Hakura Noshioki' leaves turning brown

wolverhampton, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi

Can anyone tell me why my new leaves which are a mixture of pink and white keep turning brown and brittle. I bought this shrub last year and the same thing happened. I have it growing in partial sun in a large container. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I have included a photo.

Since you mention it being grown in a container, maybe it's time to repot it? It looks to me as though it might be suffering from leaf blight, or lack of water. These are very thirsty plants, with lots of disease and insect potential! My advice is to repot it in a slightly larger pot with fresh potting soil, maybe with those water absorbing crystals added to the mix. Keep it in part to fuller shade, to minimize sun or wind burn. Water it a lot, and keep an eye out for borers!

I agree, and would add that if it's in a sunny area (well, is there such a thing over there?!?!?) the pot might be heating up and cooking the roots. Can you keep the leaves in sun but shade the pot, perhaps with a drapery of some sort?

Hi

Thank you both for your help and advice, I have taken the salix out of the container and planted in the ground in a more shady area and included some water retaining crystals and fresh compost around it. I had no idea they needed so much water the container was dry which was quite a shock as I watered it everyday. Hope it starts to improve now.

Once again thanks to you both.

Go to the Dappled Willow string and I have a picture of 3 of them planted together there. I took it yesterday in my yard.
