Help with hornbeam

Niles, MI(Zone 5a)

Any ideas as to what may be wrong with this one? It's a weeping hornbeam. Last summer it was perfect. Not so good this year.

Is it possible it was over-fertilized?

No. I've never fertilized it. Hmmmm.

If it makes you feel any better, my hop hornbeam Ostrya virginiana is deader than a doornail........

Did it get really, really dry and wilt a week or two ago?

Who might you be speaking to?

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

Anyone who will listen. But in this case it must be Dybbuk, because we all know that uppity young women like you never listen!

Oh so now I'm uppity?? That creek scene is sooo not in anybodies future anymore! Humph. Somethings gonna wilt and it sure won't be any hop hornbeam.

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

Face it, you just "can't keep up" with us guys! Hee-hee-hee!
But what's so bad about being called an uppity young woman, anyway? Think of the implications!
I gotta go -- now that I wound you up, y'all have fun now, hear?

In your dreams......down by the creek.............

Do hornbeam get anthracnose?

Other question...

Is it sitting in a wet hole?

Niles, MI(Zone 5a)

Only thing I can think of is that I watered it too much.

Is there any possibility that your plant got hit by drift of a neighbor spraying herbicides? Gasp, I've done it myself a few times and always feel like crying. I nailed a Fothergilla this year trying to spray Siberian Dogwood and your photo looks a lot like what my Fothergilla major looked like.

Do hornbeam get anthracnose?
Bad news. Quick search says the answer to your question is yes. Maybe dybbuk better prune out and dispose of all the branches and leaves that look diseased. The Morton Arb is only a hop skip and a jump from Chicago and they found Ostrya Anthracnose there.

No chance of herbicides. No one nearby cares about plants except me. :)

I think I'm just going to rip it out and put something else there. I'm not very patient.
