Need Info on pruning my camellia bushes

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 9a)

I have searched and can't seem to find an answer to my question, so I thought I would ask you guys about this problem. In April, we had some severe weather and had 2 huge Oak trees fall into the front of our house. We have gotten the house fixed but both of my camellia bushes have been damaged and look really scraggly.

I am trying to find out if I can prune them back (probably needs to be pretty drastic in order to make them look better) now.

Any help you can give me would be most appreciated.

I have severly pruned camellias that were at least 40 years old. I cut one-third of the bush off the top. If you prune before July-August when they set their buds you should have new sprouts. It will not look perfect the first year but will be fine the second year.

Well, I personally don't like pruned camellias. I think they look better in their natural form. I would only prune out the broken branches and leave the rest. I would also think the best time to prune would be around early March, right before new growth begins.

escambiaguy...obviously, I don't like to prune them either under normal circumstances since these stand 10+ feet high. But, they are in the front of my house and they look terrible.

liveoaklady..thank you for your info.
