Ashe Magnolia

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

Has anyone had experience with ashe magnolia? It is an endangered tree that is native to my area of the gulf coast. I have read that they are really picky about their location but I would like to order one this fall.

Here are a few pictures of mine. I'm up here in zone 6, so hardiness is NOT an issue. I'm growing mine in a bed I designed for rhodies, so the pH is low, organic matter high. The bed stays reasonably moist, drains well, some gaulthieria beneath the tree is growing like a weed, and normally that doesn't do well at all around here.

I screwed up on the pictures. I'll post them in a couple of follow ups.

Here is my tree. Small but precocious. It bloomed from the get-go.

The flowers are magnificent, the just opening buds even better. Unfortunately the flowers only last two, maybe three days. For some reason, my tree has not fruited, despite multitudes of pollinators getting lost in the cavernous blooms.

Nearly fully opened flower. Fragrance is good. All literature says to plant the tree in a wind-sheltered location to protect the leaves from destruction. Mine is, and the foliage looks fine right up until fall.

One more just because. The unopened buds have the size, look, and feel of an ear of corn. They are big and firm. No fall color to speak of.

I have definitely got to have one. Is that a southern magnolia in the background? I didn't know they would grow in Ohio.

Yeah, a southern. Bracken's Brown Beacon. It is supposed to be a hardier cultivar, although there are many large southern magnolias around this city that would have had to have survived the '75 and '76 winters of -26F. Here is a photo of one.
