LOL
photos from today
I'll take that as a no.
I have been trying to get Debbie to take one but she says no because it's yellow! Really what kind of excuse is that!
And I thought she was your friend....Now I get your "texas gardener" comment. C'mon, Debbie, what's a few thousand seeds when you can help out a friend?
LOL- yeah Debbie!
April how long does it take that Poinciana to get as tall as yours? I need some shade fast and in a hurry. :)
Sylvia
You are referring to my big poinciana? That tree is very tall, let's say 12 ft or more, but the diameter of the trunk at it's widest is maybe 6 inches- imagine a really tall piece of brocolli. I got the tree as a seedling 3 years ago, after 1 year I had to dig it up and replant it- not sure if it would be taller still if I hadn't dug it up. I planted it where I planted it for shade as well but it is so slender and the way that it grows, it isn't a good candidate for fast shade. Sorry.
Oh Lord April ... what is good for shade?
Shade cloth.
Sylvia I once contacted the aggie boys to ask them to recommend fast growing trees for this area- Houston- they got back w/ me and said that fast growing does not necessarily make a good tree. My entire yard is sun so I feel your pain.
April
We know fast growing dont make a good tree, but what do you do meantime? Let everything burn up? I read that you grow populars next to your good trees and when your good tree matures the popular is used for firewood. I need to show you my two Poplars in pots. :)
Shade cloth is the only thing that I can think of, it works, can be temporary, etc. Other than that I don't know. You could pay a small fortune and have a huge tree brought in...I have seen it done but I don't have that kind of discretionary budget.
April what can I use to hold it up?
I am not sure, poles of some sort? Large bamboo poles- I have bought them in the past from Gardener's Supply- reasonably priced but not sure how you'd attach it- years ago I had a space between my garage and my house and I nailed/stapled the shade cloth across the area. It worked but I don't have the same set up here.
Here's a place for bamboo poles that was recommended to me:

I need 8' poles for next year and was going to put an order in later this year with them.
Off hand I think those are much better prices.
Thanks April, I am on my to Home Depot, I know exactly what I am going to do!
Sylvia
Well make sure you share w/ us!!!
Oh I will definitely will gonna take pics if I can get the contraption going. lol
I have faith in you!
April, newbie to gardening here and I love the RC...forgive my ignorance, what does that stand for? I don't recall seeing it in any nurseries around here and I've been to all my local ones. I would have snapped that up in a hurry. The blooms are really beautiful. I have managed to plant about 800 sf of flowers my first year but missed that. Thanks!
Rangoon Creeper.. See this thread for more gushing about it: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/601164/
LOL
Greenie- one year they were really scarce around here and this year there are many at several nurseries. Last year w/ dumb luck I made some cuttings- now given away; this year I haven't had much luck, but keep trying.
April
I've been seeing them in nurseries for the last 3 summers...mine is on its second summer in the ground. They are fairly tropical. I got mine from a friend in Galveston...if they make it through their first winter...they are usually fine. Very, very heavy mulch in winter--as long as the roots are warm they will survive.
This is second summer for mine- the 1st year it wasn't so TA DAH! but this year, TA-DAH!

I like that vender but boy that seems a bit pricey- although I guess if you don't have access to it and you want it then it's a different story- whatever the market will bear.
The link was for the info--everyone in town has them now for $6-$8.
Well yeah but greenie67 can't find them in longview...
I can mail greenie one.
Guess what I got for my pic of the day...freshly potted Rusillia(sp?
Thanks April, I sure hope I can get them going. I got them loaded down with goodies. Root stimulator, Messenger, Benificial Nemetodes and Osmocote. I sure hope I can get them going. The one I got from CeeJay is blooming more and more.
Sylvia I am sure they will do fine! If not, let me know, there is plenty more where that came from. LOL. They are bit slow to do anything but once they get going they are pretty tough.
Debbie here is some of the logs I pilfered from on the corner, have not quite decided what I going to do with them yet ... they might just stay where they are ... I cant move them anyway. lol There is still two left down there. I wish I knew a man with a saw, so I can get them to stay up straight. There is another you cant see back there... look like a woman with feet up in the air. lol
Yes April, I realize that now ... I thought the one I got from CJ was a goner ... it turned black, then it just set there, then one bloom, the two. Now its up to six. I am not going to put in direct sun yet ... thanks...and you had it packed so nicely ... I owe you big time ... :)
Look at the Stonecrop collection I got from HD yesterday. I got four different ones, and I love that tall one in the middle. ...they look a mess now, but they will shape up ... I am going to pot up the broken pieces ... will have somthing to share at the RU.
Sylvia
Very cool!
