Can anyone tell me what this plant is? I bought it a few years ago at Schumacher's in New Bruanfels. There was no marker and this was the only one left. The flowers are brilliant red and about 2" wide. They only last one day like a regular hibiscus. Have a seed pod that develops lots of seeds. I haven't tried to grow them, but have given the seeds to others. The best thing about plant besides being beautiful, reliable bloomer, is the deer leave it alone.....so far.
Native plant ID
Hello Bigbubbles, I beleive what you have is
Heartleaf Rosemallow, Hibiscus cardiophyllus, a lovely Texas native indeed.
Here id the link to the plant files, http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/80842/index.html
Maybe I can get a cutting or seed from you some day, I don't have that one.
Josephine.
Yep, that's it! Thanks so much for the ID. I gave all the seeds away Thursday when we had the nursery tour, but I'm sure I'll have more soon. Will surely save you some. I haven't tried rooting a cutting. You come get it...or I could take one to the RU in Dallas hopefully! Is it too hot to try to propagate cuttings now? Sandi
Well, it is not the best time for cuttings, but I am doing some, you just have to take extra care to keep them shaded and as moist as possible, but it can work.
How exciting that you are planning to come to the Dallas R.U. It will be very nice to meet you, that garden of yours is gorgeus, it looks like you have a way with plants and landscaping.
Josephine.
Josephine...I will send you some seeds as soon as the pods dry up....which in this heat should be really soon! It was 104 at Barton Springs this afternoon. I'll try to root a cutting or two, but would rather take them to you at the RU and let you try...just in case I'm not successful. Thanks for your kind comments about yard...The backyard is mostly tropical (I grew up in MS), but the front is natives and grasses...anything else is just deer food!
Looking forward to meeting you. I love to read thru the 'natives' directory you put together. It's great!
Sandi
Thank you Sandi, I guess you and Connie have tha same problem with the deer, I imagine she will be getting some pointer from you.
It is nice that you live in the same area, more or less, and can visit each other's gardens.
Josephine.
Josephine, you probably know already that Heartleaf Hibiscus isn't very cold-hardy, so it might need protection if it gets cold enough. I have one plant which blooms a little sometimes, but it doesn't exactly thrive...I think it just doesn't like the caliche under the topsoil in that slightly raised bed. Not many plants do like caliche, so I really appreciate the ones that do well in it.
Hello Linda, I have never grown the Heartleaf Hibiscus so I appreciate the information.
I guess I will keep it potted the first year, and when I have more than one, I will take a chance leaving it one of them out in the winter and see what happens.
Josephine.
